Wins for Dolan, Hamilton, van Barneveld & Anderson

Brendan Dolan sealed his straight sets first round victory over Mark Jones with a 120 finish, rounding up a solid performance over the World Championship debutant. The ‘History Maker’ who averaged 92.98 and achieved 50% success on doubles dropped just one leg over three sets of play.

William Hill Sports Jarkko Komula and Jani Haavisto contested a decent quality all Finnish preliminary match, the younger Haavisto took the spoils 4-2 with a near 89 average to set up a first round proper meeting with Gary Anderson in the last game of the night.

James Richardson was unable to repeat his 2012 giant killing exploits despite taking the opening set against a sluggish 8th seed Andy Hamilton. The Hammer though clawed his way back into the game, nailing crucial doubles to compensate for deficiencies in his scoring and move ahead 2 sets to 1.

With 3 darts to finish 38 Richardson had the opportunity to take the game to a deciding set, choosing to split the number left him 2 darts at double 16, a dart outside the wire of the D16 and then D8 allowed Hamilton to return to the oche and pin his double for the 3-1 win.

Hamilton will now face Richie Burnett in the last 32 and although he stated in his post match interview the pair had never met, our records indicate otherwise with the Hammer 3-1 up in the head to heads.

A 108.31 average, 75% checkout success, 8 x 180’s and finishes of 121 and a match winning 111 tells the unfortunate tale of Michael Smith’s first round elimination at the hand of the 2007 Champion Raymond van Barneveld.

The Dutchman was, in essence unplayable and Smith can add the match to the list of tough draws in major tournaments this year which also includes Phil Taylor in the first round of the World Grand Prix.

Barney said of his return to form “last year I was in shock when I lost to Richardson and thought this isn’t right! I have to play more games, work hard and play every single tournament.”

Jani Haavisto impressed in his performance against Gary Anderson to close out the night. Anderson started off like a train taking the first set with a 100+ average, but the Finnish qualifier hit back matching Anderson for both scoring power and accuracy on doubles to take the second set.

In a tense and most entertaining battle, the third and fourth sets were each decided by a fifth leg with Anderson edging them both for the 3-1 victory. Jani who notched up finishes of 107, 130 said afterwards “it was a good game, I don’t know what to say, I played my best.”
