They operate on completely different sides of the fence, as Adams is a staunch BDO supporter and has vowed never to cross over to the PDC.

‘Wolfie’ has even turned down flat an invitation to Wolverhampton’s Grand Slam, a PDC event where BDO players are invited, every year since its inception in 2007.

Lewis and Adams will also play six punters each on the night with 11 drawn at random by their ticket numbers and the other spot to be auctioned on the night.

Entering the break at 3-7 in arrears Taylor came back to square the match at 8-8, however in the tense final leg it was The Asset who held his nerve as Taylor failed twice to exceed a score of 50 with his three darts.

In his first televised tournament since having laser eye surgery, Nicholson had earlier staged a comeback of his own as he knocked out the newly crowned Premier League Champion Gary Anderson, in another last leg shootout. With a quarter final meeting with James Wade, should The Asset go on to win the title, nobody could argue about the quality of his opposition en-route.

James Wade seemingly enjoying his darts for a change, edged out the Prince of Wales, Richie Burnett 9-7. Burnett the 1995 Embassy World Champion seems to have found some form of late and hopefully we will be seeing a lot more of him as he continues his resurgence. Wes Newton demolished Raymond van Barneveld 9-1, in a confident performance that those in the know have always been convinced he is capable of. A 100 average for the man from Fleetwood on the big stage facilitates a quarter final clash with Dave Chisnall.

Wes Newton demolished Raymond van Barneveld 9-1, in a confident performance that those in the know have always been convinced he is capable of. A 100 average for the man from Fleetwood on the big stage facilitates a quarter final clash with Dave Chisnall.

Chisnall’s journey to the quarter finals saw him meet John Bowles, the former rugby league playing Kenny Daglish lookalike Rileys qualifier. After taking out the big names of Manley and Beaton, Bowles couldn’t tackle Chisnall eventually losing out 9-4 to the Chizzy Rascal.

Robert Thornton overcame The Wizard Colin Osborne by a 9 legs to 7 scoreline to setup a quarter final meeting with Mark Webster who knocked out the other Rileys qualifier Andy Boulton with some impressive ton plus finishes including 164, 147 and 146 in a comfortable 9-4 win.

Denis Ovens heated up the pie (man) Andy Smith and emerged a 9-6 victor making him the eldest competitor remaining. Many are speculating a sea change in 2011 where the old guard are toppled by an ever improving wave of youth. However 53 year old veteran Ovens will be keen to bring his solid floor game to the main stage and book a semi final place, his opponent though Mark Hylton will have other ideas after seeing off Lowestoft’s Peter Wright 9 legs to 6.

TAYLOR’S REEBOK REIGN ENDED BY NICHOLSON AS NEWTON SOARS PAST BARNEY

PAUL NICHOLSON sensationally knocked reigning champion Phil Taylor out of the Speedy Hire UK Open on Saturday night with a 9-8 triumph at Bolton’s Reebok Stadium, as Wes Newton sent two-time winner Raymond van Barneveld packing.

Nicholson followed up his deciding-leg win over Gary Anderson in Saturday afternoon’s Fourth Round with another thrilling performance, edging out the 15-time World Champion to reach Sunday’s final stages.

The Newcastle-born ace opened up leads of 5-2 and 7-3 before Taylor hit back to within a leg, but a 100 finish saw him move to the brink of victory at 8-6.

A missed bullseye for the match in the next saw Taylor hit back before the defending champion levelled on double 12 – but crucially he was unable to reach a double in the decider as Nicholson posted a 180 and finished double eight for an amazing triumph.

Nicholson had defeated Taylor on his way to winning last year’s Players Championship Finals in Purfleet, and he must now face James Wade in the first of three games he will need to play on Sunday if he is to win a second major title.

“I’m so tired after those two matches and I’ve put everything into them, but I’m thrilled with my mental attitude,” said Nicholson.

“I’ll be going straight to bed after this because I’ve got a job to do on Sunday – beating Phil won’t mean anything if I don’t win the tournament tomorrow.”

He added: “Phil Taylor is such an icon and a wonderful dart player but I’ve looked a lot at how John Part plays against him with no fear.

“When it went to eight-all there was no doubt in my mind because I’ve been there before against Phil. I just wanted a chance, and I took it.”

Wade, the 2008 UK Open, continued his challenge in the event with a fine 9-7 win over resurgent Richie Burnett, who pushed the left-hander all the way but was punished for missing three darts at double top to force a deciding leg.

Fleetwood’s ever-improving Wes Newton continued his run of form with a brilliant 9-1 win over two-time winner Raymond van Barneveld, averaging 100 as he swept into the quarter-finals.

“This weekend is now different to how I’ve been playing on the PDC ProTour events and I wanted to take that form into this tournament,” said Newton, who has moved up to eighth in the PDC Order of Merit this year.

“I’ve put in more effort over the last two years and I’ve got more belief in myself, and it’s paying off because if I can take my floor game onto the stage I’m a danger to anyone.

“I’m in the quarter-finals and I’m due to become a father in a fortnight. Everything’s going well in my life and I’m happy, and I can look forward to the quarter-finals.”

Newton will take on St Helens’ Dave Chisnall in the last eight, after the PDC newcomer continued an impressive Bolton debut with wins over Ronnie Baxter and Widnes amateur John Bowles on Saturday.

Bowles had won four matches to reach the last 16, including wins over Peter Manley and Steve Beaton, but lost out 9-4 to Chisnall.

Mark Webster knocked out the other remaining Rileys Amateur Qualifier, Andy Boulton, in with a fine 9-4 victory which included checkouts of 164, 147 and 146 in a superb display, and now takes on stable-mate Robert Thornton.

The Scot’s return to top form continued in Bolton as he defeated 2009 runner-up Colin Osborne 9-7 to reach the quarter-finals.

The other last eight clash sees Denis Ovens, a semi-finalist last year, take on Mark Hylton, the left-hander from Rugeley who bettered his last 16 finish in the World Championship by defeating colourful Peter Wright 9-7 to reach the quarter-finals of a major for the first time.

Stevenage veteran Ovens won his place in the quarters with a 9-6 defeat of Andy Smith in the night’s other Fifth Round clash, leaving him as the elder statesman in the last eight aged 53, with five of the players aged 33 or under.

Sunday’s decisive final day in the £200,000 event will see the afternoon’s Quarter-Finals followed by the Semi-Finals and Final in the evening session at the Reebok Stadium, with the winner pocketing £40,000 prize money.

A limited number of tickets remain on sale for each of Sunday’s session, and can be purchased in person from the Reebok Stadium.

Speedy Hire UK Open
Saturday June 4
Fifth Round
James Wade 9-7 Richie Burnett
Robert Thornton 9-7 Colin Osborne
Paul Nicholson 9-8 Phil Taylor
Wes Newton 9-1 Raymond van Barneveld
Mark Hylton 9-7 Peter Wright
Mark Webster 9-4 Andy Boulton
Denis Ovens 9-6 Andy Smith
Dave Chisnall 9-4 John Bowles

Lewis’ run to the final of the PartyPoker.net European Championship on Sunday saw him earn automatic qualification for the tournament, held from November 15-23 at the Wolverhampton Civic.

The European Championship was the final tournament where players could win a place in the Grand Slam of Darts outright, with Phil Taylor’s run to the final, where he defeated Lewis, meaning that Alan Tabern, the third placed player in the ITV Wildcard Qualifier, comes into the field.

“I’m delighted to have qualified for the Grand Slam of Darts and I can’t wait to play in Wolverhampton,” said Lewis.

“I really enjoyed last year’s tournament and hopefully I can have a good run this year.

“I’m really pleased with my form at the moment, and reaching the final of the European Championship shows I’m playing well.”

Tabern’s qualification sweetened the blow of his quarter-final exit in the European Championship at the hands of Peter Manley – who missed out on a Grand Slam spot when he suffered a semi-final defeat to Lewis.

Tabern had won the third-fourth place play-off at the ITV Wildcard Qualifier in Scotland last month against Jamie Caven, with Lewis’ qualification means that the Leicester player misses out on a Grand Slam spot.

“Obviously it was disappointing to lose to Peter Manley in Frankfurt, but if you’d said to me before the European Championship that I’d reach the quarter-finals and qualify for the Grand Slam of Darts anyway then I’d have snapped your hand off,” said Tabern.

“You want to be in competitions like this and hopefully I can make an impact like Kevin McDine did last year as an ITV Wildcard Qualifier.

“It’s a great tournament and I’m looking forward to experiencing it first-hand.

“ITV did a brilliant job with their coverage of the European Championship and it will be great exposure for me and more experience on the big stage.”

The 32-player field includes the finalists of major televised darts tournaments over a two-year period, alongside the leading players from north America and Australia and Russia’s Anastasia Dobromyslova, the Women’s World Champion.

The draw for the 2008 PartyPoker.com Grand Slam of Darts will be made on Wednesday at the Wolverhampton Civic, with the 32 players drawn into eight four-man groups for the first round.

One player from each of the four pools below will be drawn into the eight groups for the round-robin phase of the tournament from Saturday-Tuesday, with the top two qualifying for the knockout second round.

* Tickets for the PartyPoker.com Pro-Celebrity Challenge on Friday November 14 and the PartyPoker.com Grand Slam of Darts from November 15-23 at the Wolverhampton Civic are still available on 0870 320 7000 or via wolvescivic.co.uk.

The Pro-Celebrity Challenge will see eight celebrities team up with eight of the top names in world darts at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall ahead of the start of the PartyPoker.com Grand Slam of Darts.

Ex-Liverpool and England defender Ruddock was drawn to team up with Taylor in the tournament, and they will face Women’s World Champion Anastasia Dobromyslova and six-time World Snooker Champion Steve Davis in the opening game.

“I can’t wait to play with Neil – but he’d better get practising as I’m a tough cookie!” said Taylor.

“Steve is a very good player and it’s all about whether he holds his nerve in that first match, but he’s as good at darts as he is at snooker!”

Former boxer Barry McGuigan teams up with the current PDC World Champion John Part, and they meet Wayne Mardle and actor Michael Le Vell, best known as Coronation Street’s Michael Le Vell.

“I can’t wait to play in the PartyPoker.com Pro-Celebrity Challenge,” said Le Vell, nicknamed “The Spirit”.

“I love watching darts and used to play regularly but I’m hoping for some practice advice from Phil Taylor before the event!

“I’ve played Phil Tuffnell before and beat him, so I am sure he will be looking for revenge if I get to play his team.

“I hear Neil Ruddock is pretty handy with the arrows , and I reckon Steve Davis will be keen to do well, so I am looking forward to hopefully taking them on in Wolverhampton.”

BDO World Champion Mark Webster teams up with another top sportsman, England rugby union World Cup winner Mike Tindall.

“I am really looking forward to playing with the best players in the World,” said Tindall.

“I love watching Darts on the TV when I can, especially when I am away with Gloucester with the other lads and I try and play when I can.

“I think playing in front of a few thousand people in the arena and millions of people watching on TV is going to be a brilliant experience, and I’m going to be trying my best to make sure I contribute to winning the event with James.”

They will meet former England cricketer and “I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here” winner Phil Tufnell and Raymond van Barneveld in the opening games.

Three-time Olympic javelin medallist Steve Backley links up with James Wade, while poker legend David “Devilfish” Ulliott partners Peter Manley.

TICKETS for the 2009 Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts go on sale on Monday – with promoters expecting a rush as fans look to secure their seat at Britain’s hottest indoor sporting event.

The Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts has become the country’s biggest indoor sports event since its inception in 2005 – with 8,000 fans watching the action in Liverpool last year.

The Echo Arena Liverpool will host the opening night of next year’s event on Thursday February 5, with the eight-man event travelling to Edinburgh, Coventry, Belfast, Newcastle, Manchester, Brighton, Birmingham, Glasgow, Exeter, Nottingham, Sheffield and Cardiff.

The top four players following the 14-week league phase will then compete in the play-offs on Monday May 25 at the Wembley Arena for the £125,000 title.

Tickets for all venues are released on general sale from Monday morning, priced at £20 and £30.

“More fans than ever before watched the Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts in 2008 and there has been unprecedented interest already for next year’s event,” said PDC Chairman Barry Hearn.

“This tournament has captured the imagination of the British sporting public, and you only have to look at the record-breaking averages hit by Phil Taylor earlier this year to see why.

“The standard of darts is higher than ever now and the top players, like Taylor, James Wade and Raymond van Barneveld, are rising to the challenge in front of playing in front of such huge crowds.

“The 2009 Premier League promises to be the most spectacular darts event ever seen – Raymond van Barneveld hit a nine-darter two years ago, but I think we could see two during next year’s event!

“The Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts has become a memorable night out for sports fans across the UK and next year’s tournament will give more spectators than ever the chance to see top-quality darts in the flesh.”

Tickets go on general sale on Monday September 8, from venues around the UK as well as via the PDC Ticket Line on 0871 231 0831.
