COLIN OSBORNE claimed his first major title with a 6-4 victory over Phil Taylor to win the 2009 Championship League Darts.

Osborne avenged his loss to Taylor in the final of June’s UK Open with an accomplished performance to see off the world number one and claim the £10,000 first prize at Crondon Park GC in Essex.

Osborne finished second to unbeaten Taylor in the Winners Group table after the eight-played league phase, before seeing off Mervyn King 6-1 in the semi-finals and Taylor in the decider.

He made an ideal start to the final with a 129 finish, and also missed two darts at double eight for the second leg before Taylor landed double four to level.
A brace of double top finishes put him 3-1 up before Taylor posted an 11-darter to pull back the fifth.

Double top from Osborne gave him a 4-2 cushion, only for reigning champion Taylor to crank up the pressure with a pair of 11-dart finishes.

Taylor left himself 74 to break throw in the ninth leg, but Osborne produced a superb 142 checkout on double 11 to lead 5-4.

And a missed bullseye from Taylor in the next gave the Derby-based star his chance, taking out 68 on double four for the title.

And a missed bullseye from Taylor in the next gave the Derby-based star his chance, taking out 68 on double four for the title.

“It’s a great feeling,” admitted Osborne, who totalled £24,800 prize money for the tournament after competing in four league groups and the Winners Group.
“It’s hard enough to beat Phil anyway but always even harder in the final, so that’s the icing on the cake for me.

“I thought I played well all day and kept it going in the final. I took out the 129 in the first leg and had chances to lead 2-0, and when I went 3-1 up I knew I could have been even further ahead.

“But it’s not over until it’s over and Phil came back at me well, but I managed to get over the finishing line.”

Osborne has had a disappointing time since the UK Open, losing in the first round of the last three televised tournaments, but hopes to continue this form into the forthcoming European Championship and Grand Slam of Darts.

“I put myself under a lot of pressure after the UK Open but hopefully now I can kick on for the rest of the year,” he added.

“I’ve proven to myself that if I play as well as I can do, I can beat anybody, and now I have to keep doing that.”

Osborne suffered just two defeats in the league phase, to King and Taylor, but avenged those in claiming his victory.

Taylor won all seven of his league matches, dropping just 11 legs in the process and whitewashing Mervyn King.

“I’m obviously disappointed to lose in the final, but Colin was the better man and deserved the win,” said Taylor. “He played really well and took some great finishes out.

“I’ve had a good run in this and hopefully it will stand me in good stead for the European Championship next weekend.”

King – the 2008 Championship League Darts runner-up – finished third in the table, but failed to regain his best form in the semis and ended on £13,000 for the tournament.

James Wade bounced back from losing his first three games to edge out Adrian Lewis for fourth place in the table on leg difference.

Wade, who had defeated Taylor to win Group One last month, lost to the world number one 6-2 in the semis, but still takes home £9,550 prize money.

Lewis ends the 2009 Championship League Darts as the second highest money-earner, claiming £19,500 after playing in all nine days of the tournament, finally winning Group Eight on Wednesday to book a Winners Group spot.

Mark Walsh won just two games on the day, while Jelle Klaasen and Wayne Mardle picked up one win apiece.

Championship League Darts was streamed solely on the internet via a series of ten bookmakers’ websites around the world. Prize money of £100 per leg was on offer in the Winners Group league phase and £200 per leg in the play-offs, with additional prize money of £10,000 to the champion, £5,000 to the runner-up and £2,500 each to the losing semi-finalists.

In total, £175,400 has been paid out across the nine days of the tournament, which featured 29 players in eight groups, with each group’s champion progressing to Thursday’s Winners Group.

ADRIAN LEWIS ended two years of disappointment in Championship League Darts by winning Group Eight of the tournament on Wednesday.

Lewis competed in five groups last year without winning one, and had missed out on a place in the final in each of the seven previous groups this time around.

However, he backed up his first placed finish in the Group Eight table by coming through the play-offs to take the last remaining spot in Thursday’s Winners Group.
Lewis lost to Terry Jenkins and Kirk Shepherd in the league phase, winning his other five matches, before hitting a 170 checkout in overcoming Shepherd 6-1 in the semi-finals.

He then capitalised on missed doubles from van Gerwen to assume a 4-2 lead in the decider.

Double 16 gave van Gerwen a third leg, but a brilliant ten-darter from Lewis put him one leg away from the win at 5-3.

He was waiting on 32 when van Gerwen took the ninth on double ten, but punished two misses from his opponent to finally seal the 6-4 win on double top.

“I’m so relieved it’s untrue,” said Lewis, who has now won £16,700 in this year’s event and £31,950 including last year’s prize money. “After losing in three finals last year I thought it was going to happen again today and Michael kept coming back at me. “But I managed to get it back together in the end and hopefully I can do the same in the Winners Group now tomorrow.”

Van Gerwen picked up £2,900 in a successful debut in the tournament, shown only on the internet via a series of ten bookmakers’ websites worldwide. The 20-year-old Dutchman finished second in the league table and then defeated Barrie Bates 6-4 in the semis.

Bates enjoyed a fruitful day in the tournament, picking up £2,050 in his run to the play-offs, while Shepherd made a brilliant recovery to sneak into the last four. The 2008 World Championship finalist lost his opening three matches, but won his final four games to edge out Tony Eccles on leg difference. That meant Eccles narrowly missed out on the semi-finals for a second successive day, although he picked up £3,400 overall.

A 6-2 defeat for Wayne Jones in his final league game meant he also missed out on the play-offs on leg difference, but he ends the event on £6,100 from three days of competition.

Terry Jenkins suffered a collapse in his fifth day in the tournament, losing his last three matches – including a brace of whitewashes in 16 successive losing legs – to end the day second bottom, above Holland’s Roland Scholten.

Thursday sees the eight group winners return to Crondon Park GC in Essex, headed by reigning champion Phil Taylor and world number two James Wade. Mervyn King, Mark Walsh, Wayne Mardle, Colin Osborne, Jelle Klaasen and Lewis will join them for the big-money Winners Group, with prize money of £100 per leg on offer in the league phase and £200 per leg in the play-offs.

The overall winner will pick up an additional £10,000, with the runner-up taking home £5,000 and the semi-finalists £2,500 each.
The day will be doubly crucial for Walsh and Klaasen, who could win a place in next month’s PartyPoker.com Grand Slam of Darts by reaching the final.

JELLE KLAASEN defeated Kirk Shepherd 6-1 to win Group Seven of Championship League Darts.

In arguably the tournament’s most dramatic day yet, Klaasen came from fourth in the league table following the eight-man group stage to claim victory with play-off wins over Adrian Lewis and Shepherd.

Klaasen was one of five players to finish the group phase on eight league points, with Lewis top, Shepherd second and Wayne Jones finishing third – while Tony Eccles missed out on a semi-final place on a count-back of Legs Won Against Throw to the Dutch ace.

Klaasen then overcame Lewis 6-5 in the semis, holding off a fightback as the Stoke star came from 3-1 and 5-2 down to send their game into a decider.

He then overcame some nervous early doubling in the final to power past Shepherd, who shared the opening two legs but was punished for his own misses as Klaasen took a 3-1 lead.

Shepherd, the 2008 Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship runner-up, never recovered as Klaasen won the next three legs to claim his spot in Thursday’s big-money winners group – where a place in the PartyPoker.com Grand Slam of Darts next month is also on offer for the finalists.

“I’m very happy to have qualified,” said Klaasen. “It was very close today but I’m pleased with how I played.

“I think I learned a lot from playing in Group Six last month and that showed today, and I can look forward to the Winners Group on Thursday.

“There’s a lot of prize money on offer and I can also win a place in the Grand Slam of Darts, so it’s a big day for me.”

Shepherd earned £2,550 for his day’s work on his debut in this year’s event – his best pay-day since the 2009 World Championship – and returns on Wednesday to compete in Group Eight.

Lewis will also be back in action in Group Eight, giving him the distinction of having competed on all eight days of this year’s tournament without yet having won a group, with his prize money now totalling £13,550.

Wolverhampton’s Jones was a narrow 6-5 loser to Shepherd in the semi-final, allowing the youngster to come from 5-2 down to edge victory.

Jones had won a semi-final spot in a dramatic final round of matches – leaping from sixth to third with a 6-5 win over Shepherd.

Andy Smith was knocked out of the event on leg difference, with Terry Jenkins narrowly avoiding elimination, while wins in his final two games were not enough to save Co Stompe from being knocked out.

Dutch duo Roland Scholten and Michael van Gerwen come in for Group Eight, alongside Wales’ Barrie Bates.

The Group Eight winner will join James Wade, Phil Taylor, Mervyn King, Mark Walsh, Wayne Mardle, Colin Osborne and Klaasen in Thursday’s Winners Group.

COLIN OSBORNE defeated nine-dart hero Jelle Klaasen 6-3 to win the final of Group Six in Championship League Darts.

Osborne had competed for the previous three days in the internet-televised tournament, but progressed to the Winners Group for a second successive year with the triumph.

He finished second overall in the day’s league phase, alongside Klaasen and Wayne Jones on five wins, after making a fine start to the day with four straight wins.

He then defeated Jones 6-4 in the semi-finals, before a clinical display saw off debutant Klaasen in the decider.

Osborne took an immediate 3-0 lead in the final, including a 110 finish against the throw, before finishes of 134 and 130 put Klaasen back in the contest.

However, he was left waiting on a finish in the next two legs as Osborne took out 124 on the bull and then double top to lead 5-2.

A 96 finish gave Klaasen a third leg, but Osborne took the next on double five to seal victory and his spot in the Winners Group on October 22.

“I’m finally through at the fourth time of asking and it’s a big relief,” said Osborne, who has won £8,700 so far in the event.

“I started off pretty well today, I was solid and got the points on the board early on and it was good just to get into the semi-finals.

“I started off pretty well today, I was solid and got the points on the board early on and it was good just to get into the semi-finals.

“I played solidly against Wayne and also against Jelle in the final, and I finished well.”

He added: “I lost in the final on Wednesday and had to pick myself up again, but you can’t complain because you’re playing darts and have to get on with it.

“These are long days and it’s tough, but I’ve won one and it’s great – I get to rest now and just come back for the Winners Group!”

Klaasen, making his first ever appearance in the Championship League Darts event, showed his quality with some brilliant displays in the league phase, notably hitting a nine-darter against Osborne in their group match.

He was joined by Jones, making his 2009 debut, in winning five league matches, while Lewis edged out Terry Jenkins for fourth by winning his final two league matches 6-1 and 6-0.

Lewis, though, was unable to finally qualify after losing in a deciding leg to Klaasen in the semi-finals after leading 5-3.

The Stoke youngster has appeared in all six groups so far this year, and will return next month for Group Seven having won £11,100 but not yet qualified for the Winners Group.

Jenkins and Andy Smith will also come back in Group Seven on October 20, but Denis Ovens and Mark Dudbridge were eliminated after picking up just one win on Thursday.

Group Seven will be played on Tuesday October 20 at the start of the final three days of action from Crondon Park GC in Essex, with Kirk Shepherd, Tony Eccles and Holland’s Co Stompe coming into the fray.

WAYNE MARDLE took Group Five glory in Championship League Darts with a 6-3 final victory over Colin Osborne.

Mardle lost out in the third group of last year’s tournament, but ensured a spot in October’s Winners Group of the internet-televised competition with a flourish on Wednesday.

He recovered from a loss to Osborne in the day’s opening games to win five successive games in the league phase, finishing second in the table.

He then edged out Terry Jenkins 6-5 in the semi-finals, and came from 3-2 down to defeat Osborne in the decider.

Osborne had taken a 3-2 lead early on, but was punished for a tired display as Mardle levelled, took the next two legs to lead 5-3 and then sealed victory with a 94 finish of single 18, double 18 and double top.

“I’m absolutely delighted,” said Mardle. “Last year I was massively disappointed to lose in the third group and my aim was to make it through at the first time of asking today.

“I’ve managed to do that, and it’s a great confidence boost for me going into the Skybet World Grand Prix soon.”

Osborne will now return to compete in a fourth day at Crondon Park GC in Essex on Thursday, as but took home £2,400 for his unsuccessful Group Five attempt.

He sneaked into the semi-finals ahead of Denis Ovens on leg difference, and came from 3-1 down to win 6-3 in the semis against Mark Dudbridge.

Dudbridge, making his entrance into this year’s event, won the league phase after picking up six wins in his seven league games before running out of steam in the play-offs.

Jenkins, who topped the Group Four league on Tuesday, suffered a second successive semi-final loss but will be back on Thursday alongside Ovens and Adrian Lewis, who failed to qualify once again and will maintain an ever-present record in the tournament on day six.

Peter Manley suffered elimination in his first day in the tournament on Wednesday, alongside Kevin Painter, who failed to win a game after being the runner-up 24 hours earlier in Group Four.

Former Lakeside Champion Jelle Klaasen, Andy Smith and Wayne Jones enter the event in Group Six on Thursday.

MARK WALSH defeated Kevin Painter 6-4 to win Group Four of Championship League Darts on Tuesday.

The Hertfordshire ace booked his place in the tournament’s Winners Group for a second successive year following a consistent day at Crondon Park GC in Essex.

Having finished top of the Group Three league table only to lose in the semi-finals last week, Walsh reversed that this time.

He ended the eight-player round-robin phase in fourth spot, but overcame unbeaten leader Terry Jenkins 6-3 in the semi-finals.

Walsh then came from 4-2 down to defeat Painter in the final by taking four successive legs.

Walsh led 2-1 only for Painter to hit a 128 checkout and level, double eight to break throw and then double four in the sixth leg – after hitting seven treble 20s in the leg – to open up a two-leg lead.

Walsh won the seventh and then took out 120 against the throw to level, before punishing a missed double 12 from Painter to move 5-4 up and then seal the win on tops.

“I’m over the moon,” said Walsh. “It was a good day all round and I’m really pleased to have got through to the Winners Group.

“I really enjoy the tournament and it’s a great challenge, but I can look forward to coming back in October now.”

Walsh won four of his seven league matches but had to defeat Colin Lloyd in his final game to book a semi-final spot, before coming through the play-offs.

Jenkins, making his debut in this year’s event, was unbeaten in the league phase following some fine displays to earn the maximum possible prize money of £2,100, but fell at the semi-final stage.

Adrian Lewis’ day included a whitewash win over Vincent van der Voort, but he finished third in the final table and then went down to Painter, who picked up five wins in his seven league games.

Van der Voort and Lloyd were both eliminated from the tournament in Group Four after collecting just one win apiece, while Colin Osborne and Denis Ovens progress to Group Five on Wednesday.

They join Jenkins, Painter and Lewis, who will be maintaining an unwanted ever-present record so far in this year’s tournament, while Peter Manley, Wayne Mardle and Mark Dudbridge come into the fray.

Championship League Darts Group Five will begin at 11am on Wednesday and is screened live worldwide via a series of bookmakers’ websites.

MERVYN KING claimed victory in Group Three of Championship League Darts with a 6-2 defeat of Vincent van der Voort.

King bounced back from the disappointment of semi-final defeats on the opening two days of the tournament by booking his place in October’s Winners Group in a strong finish to Group Three.

King finished second in the league table following the eight-player group stage, but defeated Colin Osborne 6-1 in the semi-finals and dropped just two legs against van der Voort in a high-quality final.

The Dutchman won the opening leg against the throw to lead, but missed four darts for the second leg, with King checking out double top to level and then producing an 11-dart finish, a 150 checkout and a bullseye to move 4-1 up.

Van der Voort hit seven perfect darts on his way to the sixth leg, which he won in 11 darts, but could do little as King won the next two to seal victory.

King earned £2,900 for the day, on top of £4,100 won in the first two days to take his earnings to £7,000 ahead of the big-money Winners Group next month.

“I’m really pleased to get through,” said King. “It sounds daft but I’m really relieved I don’t have to play again next week now because I struggled today.

“People this it’s easy but it’s mentally and physically draining. You’re at the venue for 12 hours practising and playing and it’s really hard for all the players.

“It was hard work on the first day because I was a little out of practice and my arm didn’t feel quite right, then on day two I made the semi-finals again.

“After the third game today things clicked for me and it must have been right because I made it through, so I’m really happy.

“I’d lost to Colin Osborne in the league game earlier today but felt I threw that away and got my own back in the semis and did the business against Vincent.”

Van der Voort picked up £2,500 on the day, having finished fourth overall before seeing off Mark Walsh 6-3 in the semis.

Walsh won six of his seven league games before running out of steam in the semis, while Colin Lloyd escaped elimination in the final round of matches for the second successive day.

Adrian Lewis also progressed to Group Four – to be held next Tuesday – in dramatic fashion, winning 6-5 against van der Voort in the final round to knock out Robert Thornton.

The Scot is joined by Alan Tabern in dropping out of the competition, with the left-hander victorious only once on Thursday but left to ponder two earlier 6-5 defeats where he had held 5-2 leads.

Championship League Darts continues with Group Four from 11am next Tuesday, with matches screened exclusively live on the internet through a series of ten bookmakers’ websites.

World number five Terry Jenkins, Kevin Painter and Denis Ovens come in to join Walsh, Osborne, Van der Voort, Lloyd and Lewis in Group Four, with prize money of £50 per leg on offer in the league phase and £100 per leg in the play-offs.

Phil Taylor ruthlessly whitewashed Mark Walsh to win Group Two of Championship League Darts.

Taylor bounced back from defeat to James Wade in the Group One final with a flawless second day in the internet-streamed tournament at Crondon Park GC in Essex.

Taylor powered through the eight-player league phase with seven wins in as many games, including whitewashes of Adrian Lewis and Colin Lloyd to pick up the maximum possible £2,100 from £50 per leg won.

He then defeated Mervyn King 6-3 in the semi-finals, and then saw off Walsh in style in the final to take his prize money on the day to £3,300 as well as securing a place in October’s Winners Group.

Walsh was left with little chance in the final, with Taylor taking the first leg comfortably, hitting two 180s in winning the second and double top for a 3-0 lead.

Walsh hit a maximum of his own to leave 36 in the fourth, but missed three darts at double 18 and was punished as Taylor took out double top.

Taylor hit two more 180s in a 12-darter to move 5-0 up, before wrapping up the win on double 16.

“I’m really happy and also relieved to win Group Two,” said Taylor. “James Wade was the better player on Tuesday but I’m delighted with my performance today.

“Winning through from Group Two means I can rest now ahead of the Virgin Atlantic South African Masters next weekend, but it’s been great preparation for that event and the Skybet World Grand Prix too.

“I’ll be watching the rest of Championship League Darts with interest and am looking forward to coming back in October for the Winners Group.”

Walsh, a group winner in the inaugural Championship League Darts last year, finished second in the league table on his 2009 debut, picking up four wins in the league phase.

He then defeated Alan Tabern 6-4 in the semis, and picked up £2,250 for his day’s work in Essex.

Tabern and King also picked up four wins in the league phase and were eventually separated for third and fourth place by a count-back of legs won against the throw in the seven matches.

There was further drama at the foot of the table, with King’s 6-0 win over Andy Hamilton and a 6-1 victory for Colin Lloyd against Dennis Priestley in the final round of matches seeing Lloyd escape elimination and end Hamilton and Priestley’s challenge in the event.

Walsh, Tabern, King, Adrian Lewis and Lloyd will all return to Crondon Park on Thursday for Group Three, and are joined by Colin Osborne, Vincent van der Voort and debutant Robert Thornton.

Play will begin at 11am and games are screened exclusively live on the internet through a series of ten bookmakers’ websites.

JAMES WADE defeated Phil Taylor 6-4 to win Group One of the Championship League Darts – despite the reigning champion hitting a nine-darter on the 2009 event’s opening day.

World number two Wade booked his place in the Winners Group of the internet-televised tournament in style at Crondon Park GC in Essex, claiming two wins in a highly profitable day.

Wade missed out on a place in last year’s Winners Group but followed up victory over Taylor in the eight-player league phase on Tuesday with a high-quality win in the final.

Two 121 finishes on the bullseye helped Wade into an early 3-1 lead against Taylor, who cut the gap to 4-3 before the left-hander hit two 180s in setting up a potential nine-darter.

Although he missed out on that feat, he took leg eight to lead 5-3 and eventually sealed a 6-4 victory with a fifth maximum of the final and a 100 checkout.

He had earlier overcome Taylor 6-5 in the league phase and topped the table after the round-robin stage, before edging out Mervyn King 6-5 in the semi-finals.

With prize money of £50 per leg on offer in the league phase and £100 per leg in the play-offs, Wade pocketed £3,250 as well as a place in October’s Winners Group.

“I’m delighted to get through,” said Wade. “I was disappointed last year when I lost out in two groups and missed the Winners Group so it’s a relief to qualify this time.

“Just winning the group today was tough because of the quality of players, but to then win the semi-finals and final too is brilliant.”

Taylor had been unbeaten in last year’s event – winning Group One and the Winners Group – but a defeat to Wade was later followed by a 6-4 loss to King in the group stage.

He did, though, hit a perfect nine-dart finish during a 6-1 win over John Part, his seventh in a televised competition during his illustrious career.

The World Champion finished second in the table, and then defeated Adrian Lewis 6-3 in the semis in pocketing £2,950 for his day’s work – although he will be amongst the eight competitors in Wednesday’s Group Two.

Lewis and King will join Taylor back at Crondon Park on Wednesday, alongside Colin Lloyd and Alan Tabern, who finished fifth and sixth respectively in Group One.

Canadian star John Part and Ronnie Baxter were eliminated on day one, having only picked up one win apiece in their seven league games.

Two-time World Champion Dennis Priestley comes into the event for Group Two, alongside two of the 2009 Group Winners, Andy Hamilton and Mark Walsh.

Championship League Darts Group Two will begin at 11am on Wednesday, and is shown exclusively live on the internet through a series of ten bookmakers’ websites.
