Part Wins North American Darts Championship

Posted on July 1st, 2010

JOHN PART defeated Darin Young 6-4 to win the North American Darts Championship as the New Tropicana World Series of Darts Festival came to a close in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

Part has endured a tough year after slipping to the edge of the PDC’s top 32, but emerged victorious from the 79-strong field of American and Canadian stars to pick up the £5,000 title at Las Vegas’ Tropicana Hotel.

The three-time World Champion drew on all his experience during the event, but particularly during his semi-final and final wins over Gary Mawson and young respectively.

Part dropped just three legs in defeating Alvin Martin and Greg Lewis in his opening two games, before seeing off Shawn Brenneman and Chris White 6-4 to reach the semis.

However, he stared defeat in the face against Mawson, who hit back from 5-4 down to level a tight match but then missed seven match darts in the decider, before Part took out double top for the win.

Taylor Wins World Cricket Championship

Posted on June 27th, 2010

PHIL TAYLOR kicked off the New Tropicana World Series of Darts Festival with victory in the World Cricket Championship, coming from 2-0 down to defeat Mark Walsh in the final.

The event, held in the cricket format of darts, was the first of five to be held at Las Vegas’ Tropicana Hotel from June 26-30, with $200,000 prize money on offer for over 150 players from around the world.

World number one Taylor showed his class to take the World Cricket Championship title, only dropping four legs throughout the Saturday’s event.

He was a 3-0 winner against Howard Meyers, Andy Fordham and Kirk Shepherd in his opening three games, before defeating former World Champions Richie Burnett and Steve Beaton 3-1 to reach the semi-finals.

There, he defeated Mark Dudbridge 3-0 to move into the decider, where he faced Walsh.

Hertfordshire ace Walsh dominated the opening two legs of the final to take a 2-0 lead, before Taylor edged a high-quality third and then levelled in a tight fourth leg.

The deciding leg saw Taylor take control of the 20 bed immediately, but Walsh hit back to close the 19, 18, 17 and 15 beds – only for Taylor to hit back and seal victory with two bullseyes.

England Win Jocky Wilson Cup

Posted on December 6th, 2009

PHIL TAYLOR and James Wade led England to glory in the inaugural PartyPoker.com Jocky Wilson Cup with a whitewash of Scotland at the Braehead Arena in Glasgow on Saturday night.

The duo defeated Scottish pair Gary Anderson and Robert Thornton as well as silencing 3,000 Glaswegians to take the trophy – named in honour of Kirkcaldy’s legendary former World Champion – home south of the border.

Wade came from 4-0 down to defeat Anderson 6-4 in the opening singles game, before Taylor whitewashed Thornton 6-0 to double the lead.

England then secured the match-winning two points to lead 4-0 with a 6-2 win in the 1001 doubles match, ensuring that they could not be defeated.

Wade put England further in front with a 6-4 win over Thornton in an entertaining clash – which included a 160 finish from the left-hander – before world number one Taylor wrapped up the victory by seeing off Anderson by the same scoreline.

“I’m really pleased and proud to have won,” said Taylor. “Jocky’s a legend so to win the first event staged in his name is fantastic.

“Robert came back brilliantly from losing 6-0 and Gary was superb, but James showed his quality. It was great fun.”

Jocky Wilson Cup Preview

Posted on December 4th, 2009

PHIL TAYLOR is hoping to lead England to glory in the inaugural Jocky Wilson Cup on Saturday night – and then dedicate the win to the Scottish darts legend.

Taylor and James Wade will take on leading Scottish pair Gary Anderson and Robert Thornton at the Braehead Arena on Saturday night, facing off in a format similar to Davis Cup tennis.

Anderson and Wade meet in the opening game before Taylor takes on Thornton, with the teams returning to the stage for a Doubles contest – over the 1001 distance – before playing two further Singles matches over the best of 11 legs.

“I played pairs with Jocky for three or four years,” said Taylor. “He was a great lad but a bit unpredictable – he’d either hit it or he didn’t, and he was very erratic.

“He was funny to play with but probably one of the hardest players to play against, because you just didn’t know what he was going to do.

“It would be great to win on Saturday and dedicate the victory to him in his own country.”

Thornton, the runner-up in January’s Players Championship Finals, said: “Jocky was a legend and I loved watching him when he was World Champion.

Taylor Wins German Darts Championship

Posted on November 29th, 2009

PHIL TAYLOR won the PartyPoker.net German Darts Championship title for a second time with an 11-4 win over Mervyn King in Halle.

Taylor, the 2007 champion, atoned for his loss to Co Stompe in last year’s decider by claiming his 22nd tournament win of the year and adding a further £20,000 to his prize winnings.

Taylor followed up his four wins on Saturday with a narrow 8-6 win over Adrian Lewis in a thrilling quarter-final, a 9-1 defeat of Paul Nicholson in the semis and a comprehensive defeat of King in the final.

Lewis led Taylor 3-1 in the last eight before the world number one reeled off five successive legs to pull clear, only for the youngster to level, including legs of 11 and ten darts.

Taylor, though, hit a ten-darter of his own to lead 7-6 before sealing the win, and improved on his 106 average with a 109 average in storming past Nicholson in the semis.

Taylor Wins South African Masters

Posted on September 28th, 2009

PHIL TAYLOR defeated James Wade 6-4 to take victory in the Virgin Atlantic South African Masters – while Mervyn King hit a nine-darter in the tournament.

Taylor claimed victory at the Emperors Palace Casino for a third successive year with a fine display in Johannesburg.

He defeated South African Christo Meiring 4-1 and then saw off John Part 5-2 to reach the final, before battling from behind to see off world number two Wade.

Wade led 2-1 and had chances to extend that lead, only for Taylor to level and edge 3-2, 4-3 and 5-4 up – despite a 116 checkout from Wade.

He then sealed victory on double top, earning a South African treble to extend his unbeaten record in the country and warm up in style for the forthcoming Skybet World Grand Prix.

“I’m delighted to have won the South African Masters again,” said Taylor. “I love coming out here and playing in South Africa and it’s a good tournament.

“The South African players were very good and each year they are getting better and better. They are more confident and have been on stage a few times, but they need more competition against the big boys.

“Once they get that, they will become more competitive and start to challenge us.”
