RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD’S bid to return to major honours in Holland was boosted when he reached the semi-finals of the RTL7 International Masters on Sunday night – and he is joined in the last four by Phil Taylor, Gary Anderson and Vincent van der Voort.

Van Barneveld powered past Roland Scholten 8-3 in Sunday’s quarter-finals to set up an all-Dutch semi-final with van der Voort at the Hotel Zuiderduin in Egmond aan Zee.

The five-time World Champion, who had progressed through his group unbeaten 24 hours earlier, opened with finishes of 161 and 170 against Scholten, and broke a two-all deadlock with five successive legs on his way to victory.

“I’m really happy to be into the semi-finals and hopefully I can win the title on Monday,” said van Barneveld, who averaged 99.53 in a strong display.

“I’ve been in good form and it’s great to keep that going. My finishing was good and it will be important to keep that up against Vincent.”

Van der Voort booked his place in the last four by defeating Group A winner Co Stompe 8-6.

Stompe led 5-4 at one stage, but missed doubles cost him dearly as van der Voort won four of the final five legs to seal victory.

Monday’s other semi-final will feature Phil Taylor and Gary Anderson, after they defeated James Wade and Adrian Lewis respectively.

Anderson had won through Group D unbeaten earlier in the evening, overcoming both Wade and Simon Whitlock 8-4 before left-hander Wade edged out the Australian 8-7 in their deciding game to progress to the last eight.

Taylor’s strong form continued with an 8-3 defeat of Wade in their quarter-final, as the 15-time World Champion averaged 107.65 in defeating the world number three.

“I’m delighted to be through to the semi-finals and even though I look serious, inside I’m enjoying every minute of this tournament,” said Taylor.

“My finishing was superb against James and it had to be because he was coming off the back of a great win against Simon. Gary will be another tough test on Monday and I love playing him.”

Anderson ensured his place in the last four with his first win over Lewis since 2009, as he came from 4-0 down to avenge his defeats in January’s World Championship final and Thursday’s Premier League Darts contest.

Lewis started superbly to break throw twice in the opening four legs in leadin 4-0, but Anderson was aided by finishes of 96, 82 and 88 in hitting back to leve.

Lewis landed the third of his four 180s in taking the ninth leg, but Anderson added three more maximums of his own in winning the next four without reply, sealing victory with a second 11-dart finish of the game.

“I’m looking forward to playing Phil again because we seem to bring the best out of each other,” said Anderson, who lost 8-6 to Taylor in the Premier League a fortnight ago.

“It was a tough night for me to play two group games and the quarter-finals, but I’m really pleased to be through to the semis now.

“I hit back well when Adrian went 4-0 up, but once I got back to four-all I knew I could kick on and get the win.”

World Champion Lewis said: “Gary played well and I took my foot off the gas after going 4-0 up, which I shouldn’t have done.

“Once I let him in he took some good finishes out and he was the better player on the night. With the standard now you can’t afford to miss more than one dart at a double and my misses cost me.”

Wade will get a chance to avenge his loss to Taylor when they meet in the Premier League Darts in Brighton next Thursday, and he said: “Phil played better than me but I am coming back into form slowly.

“I can take a lot of positives out of this, especially how I played against Simon Whitlock, and I played well in patches, but my whole game isn’t too far off.”

PHIL TAYLOR and Raymond van Barneveld progressed unbeaten into the quarter-finals of the RTL7 International Masters on Saturday night, and will be joined in the last eight at the Hotel Zuiderduin in Egmond aan Zee by World Champion Adrian Lewis and Vincent van der Voort.

Taylor defeated both Lewis and Terry Jenkins to win both of his games in Group B at the Hotel Zuiderduin, confirming his return to top form after rising to the head of the 888.com Premier League Darts table on Thursday.

Taylor averaged 106.99 in an 8-4 win over Jenkins in his opening game, leading 3-0 and 5-1 before the Ledbury ace hit back to trail only 6-4.

Taylor, though, took the next two to claim victory and stepped up a gear for his clash with Lewis, gaining revenge over the World Champion for last month’s Premier League defeat with a sensational 8-4 victory.

The pair shared 12 180s, and Taylor averaged 113.92 compared to 108.78 from Lewis in a brilliant contest, with the youngster coming from 4-1 down to trail only 5-4 at one stage before the world number one reeled off the last three legs without reply.

“I’m over the moon to get through to Sunday’s quarter-finals,” said Taylor. “I’m playing like the old Phil Taylor and it’s coming back together for me now.

“I really enjoyed both games. Terry missed a few doubles against me, but Adrian played really well and I thought he would hit a nine-darter, and I had a chance at a ten-darter too – it was a great standard.”

Lewis returned to the stage for his winner-takes-all game with Jenkins, and averaged over 100 in an 8-3 victory.

Jenkins levelled after falling 2-0 down early on, but Lewis won six of the next seven legs to take his place in the quarter-finals.

“It’s hard to pick yourself up after averaging 108 and losing, but I went up against Terry and did a good job,” said Lewis. “I’ve played well in both games and I’m looking forward to the quarter-finals.

“I’ll have a good rest, come back fresh on Sunday and hopefully improve in the quarter-finals.”

Jenkins said: “My finishing has ben terrible and I’ve got to put it right. My scoring has been brilliant, but I’m missing too many doubles and it’s frustrating for me.”

Meanwhile, five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld delighted the sell-out Dutch crowd at the Hotel Zuiderduin with victories against Vincent van der Voort and Michael van Gerwen to win Group C.

Van Barneveld edged a tight contest with van der Voort to take their opening game, before seeing off 21-year-old van Gerwen 8-5, averaging over 103 in the process.

Van der Voort and van Gerwen then battled out a thriller for the right to join him in the last eight, with van der Voort eventually prevailing 8-4.

He led 3-0 and 4-1 before van Gerwen took out a 14-darter against the throw and a 112 finish to level, but van der Voort killed off his challenge by winning the next four to progress.

Van der Voort will now meet Group A winner Co Stompe in the opening quarter-final on Sunday night, with van Barneveld facing Roland Scholten.

MICHAEL SMITH defeated St Helens rival Dave Chisnall 6-5 to win the second UK Open Qualifier at the Barnsley Metrodome on Sunday – dramatically claiming his maiden PDC ProTour victory.

The 20-year-old followed up Saturday’s success in the PDC Unicorn Youth Tour event, when he hit a nine-darter and reached the final before losing to Shaun Griffiths, by claiming his first professional title in Barnsley.

Smith had never won past the last 16 on the PDC ProTour before, but broke that run in style with a brilliant day of darts.

After defeating Louis Blundell, Gary Mawson and Nick Fullwell by only dropping five legs in his first three games, Smith came from 5-2 down to defeat Robert Thornton in the last 16.

He then avenged a 6-1 loss to Vincent van der Voort in Saturday’s UK Open Qualifier with a 6-2 quarter-final victory, and then overcame world number six Simon Whitlock 6-4 in the semi-finals to earn a place in the final.

The youngster made a superb start to the decider, taking out 106 for the first leg, 72 for the second and double top to lead 3-0, before Chisnall hit back with a 98 finish, double eight to break and a 12-darter to square the game.

The pair shared the next two, before Smith hit a 180 and took out 85 to move a leg away from victory.

The duo opened the tenth leg with maximums, with Chisnall taking out 82 on tops to force a deciding leg – with both players suffering nerves in a tense and dramatic finale.

Smith hit two 140s to be first to a finish but missed double top for a 104 finish and two further darts for the match, only for Chisnall to see a dart at tops to grab the title land low.

Smith returned, and took out double five with his third dart to claim the win and his maiden title.

“It’s the best feeling I’ve ever had in my life,” said Smith. “Hitting the nine-darter yesterday was one achievement and now I’ve done this, and it’s unreal.

“On Saturday I missed a lot of doubles when I lost to Vincent but playing in the Youth Tour event got my confidence up. Doing so well in that made me do what I did today.

“I thought I’d end up losing in the last 16 again like I have done a few times before but as soon as I got past that stage I thought nobody was going to stop me.

“I live up to my ‘Bully’ nickname, hitting 12-dart legs, 180s and 140s and not missing my doubles this time.

“Playing Dave in the final made it easier for me because we’d played twice in Players Championships in Germany recently and he beat me both times, so I owed him one for that!

“When I went 3-0 up and started to miss a few doubles I thought I might lose it, but I battled through, kept my head high and won it.

“Now I’ve won one tournament nothing’s going to stop me. I want to get into the top 64 this year and keep my Tour Card, then get into the top 32 and challenge the best players in the world.”

Chisnall’s run saw him reach his first PDC ProTour final since winning through January’s Qualifying School to earn him a spot on the PDC circuit, and followed three successive quarter-finals ahead of Sunday’s event.

He had to defeat Stephen Hardy, Kevin Painter, Colin Monk, Co Stompe and Shane O’Connor to reach the quarter-finals, where he edged out Wes Newton 6-5 after the Fleetwood ace missed two darts to take victory in the deciding leg.

Chisnall then enjoyed a good tussle with local favourite Darren Johnson in the semis before prevailing 6-4, and picked up £3,000 for his day’s work alongside ensuring a spot in June’s UK Open televised finals in Bolton.

Whitlock suffered disappointment in the semi-finals for a second successive day in Barnsley, while Johnson’s run was his best-ever on the PDC ProTour.

Mark Webster and Mark Walsh joined van der Voort and Newton in reaching the last eight, while Saturday’s UK Open Qualifier winner Steve Brown was amongst the last 16 losers alongside young duo Arron Monk and Shane O’Connor.

JOHN PART defeated Darin Young 6-4 to win the North American Darts Championship as the New Tropicana World Series of Darts Festival came to a close in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

Part has endured a tough year after slipping to the edge of the PDC’s top 32, but emerged victorious from the 79-strong field of American and Canadian stars to pick up the £5,000 title at Las Vegas’ Tropicana Hotel.

The three-time World Champion drew on all his experience during the event, but particularly during his semi-final and final wins over Gary Mawson and young respectively.

Part dropped just three legs in defeating Alvin Martin and Greg Lewis in his opening two games, before seeing off Shawn Brenneman and Chris White 6-4 to reach the semis.

However, he stared defeat in the face against Mawson, who hit back from 5-4 down to level a tight match but then missed seven match darts in the decider, before Part took out double top for the win.

Part also had to dig deep to see off American number one Young in the final, although he took the early lead with a two-dart 68 finish to punish a pair of missed doubles from the American in the opening leg.

A 111 checkout doubled Part’s lead, and although Young hit a 137 checkout to get on the scoreboard, an 84 finish gave the former World Champion a 3-1 cushion.

Young took out a fine 104, with Part waiting on double top, to win the fifth leg before levelling on double eight.

Part, though, took out 124 to break throw again with a 12-darter in the seventh before double ten put him a leg away from the win, after Young missed two darts at double top.

The Canadian missed double 16 for a 108 finish which would have give him the win in the next, as Young landed double five to stay in the game at 5-4, before Part landed a 180 to give himself breathing space in the next, with double four securing the triumph.

“It’s hard to put into words what this means,” said an emotional Part afterwards. “In a couple of weeks I might realise the significance of this but I’m going to enjoy this moment.

“Normally I am playing with all the top pros, but this was exclusively a north American event doesn’t happen very often. It does mean a lot and I love to compete and love to win.

“I played a lot of friends who I’ve known for a long time and played many times, like Shawn Brenneman, Chris White, Gary Mawson and Darin Young. It was an emotional day and not easy to play.

“I was very lucky to win the semi-final against Gary Mawson, which was always going to be a hard match because we’ve been friends for so long. He had me dead and buried and I got away with it, and maybe there was a touch of luck that I won – and I haven’t felt lucky all week until now!”

Young had also had to produce some superb darts to reach the final, coming from 3-0 down against Larry Butler in the semi-finals to level at four-all before winning a deciding 11th leg with a 110 checkout, as his opponent waited on a finish.

Young justified his second seeding with wins over Eddie Lawrence, Dan Lauby, Donny Joe and Nico Depaynos to reach the last four, and took home £2,500 as runner-up.

Butler, the 1994 World Matchplay winner, rolled back the years in his run to the semis, defeating another veteran star, Paul Lim, 6-5 in the quarter-finals after his opponent had missed one dart for victory.

Butler also overcame Dave Switzer, Scott Kirchner, John Kuczynski and Bill Davis on a tough route to the latter stages.

Reigning NADC champion Scott Burnett was defeated 6-4 by Mawson in the quarter-finals, with Mawson also seeing off top Canadian Gerry Convery in his run to the last four.

World number one Taylor showed his class to take the World Cricket Championship title, only dropping four legs throughout the Saturday’s event.

“I’m really happy to win this because it’s a tough format,” said Taylor. “The cricket format really makes you think and it’s a great leveller.

“It was a very challenging day and Mark played really well in the final, so to come back from behind and win it is satisfying for me.”

Walsh had defeated top American Darin Young 3-1 in the semi-finals, as well as knocking out Ronnie Baxter, an experienced cricket player, in the quarters.

Before that, he dropped only five legs in his opening wins over Nick Fullwell, Adrian Lewis, Vinceint van der Voort and Andy Hamilton.

MERVYN KING picked up his second PDC Pro Tour win of 2008 with victory in the PartyPoker.net Dutch Darts Trophy.

King defeated Raymond van Barneveld 3-2 in the final to claim the £5,000 winner’s cheque, following up his victory in April’s Scottish Players Championship with another title to jump up to 12th in the PDC Order of Merit.

He defeated Mensur Suljovic, Adrian Gray and Wes Newton in the early stages and then recorded 3-1 wins over Robert Thornton and Colin Lloyd to reach the final.

King took the first set of the final without reply before van Barneveld replied in Kind to level matters, only for the Norfolk man to edge the third in a deciding leg.

A 118 finish put him in front in the fourth, but two missed match darts allowed van Barneveld to level in the next leg before the Dutchman took out 156 for the set.

But King landed a fourth maximum of the game in winning the final set’s opener, and pounced on a missed double 14 from his opponent to seal the victory.

Van Barneveld came from a set down to win his semi-final against Andy Hamilton, having only dropped two sets in earlier wins over Robert Watson-Lang, Steve Maish, Mark Dudbridge and Colin Osborne.

Jelle Klaasen recorded a nine-dart leg in his win over Terry Jenkins, earning him a £4,800 bonus as the first player to achieve the feat in a Players Championship since John MaGowan in August.

Klaasen went on to lose to Denis Ovens in the last 16, while his compatriot Michael van Gerwen – who is closing on a place in the world’s top 32 – was a narrow quarter-final loser to Hamilton.

Sunday’s second Players Championship event at the Holiday Inn in Leiden, Holland will be the final event of 2008 to count towards qualification for the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship via the Players Championship Order of Merit and Continental Europe Order of Merit.

It will also be decisive in confirming the top 32 players in this year’s Players Championship Order of Merit, who will compete in January’s inaugural Players Championship Finals at the Circus Tavern.

TERRY JENKINS defeated namesake Andy Jenkins to claim victory in the John McEvoy Gold Dart Classic Players Championship in Killarney.

The world number five picked up his first title for 18 months with a strong display at Ireland’s National Event Centre.

He lost just one set throughout the day, in his opening game against Arthur O’Brien, and saw off Stephen O’Connor, Brian Doheny, Steve Maish and Felix McBrearty to reach the semi-finals.

Jenkins then whitewashed Kirk Shepherd in the last four before repeating that scoreline against Portsmouth ace Andy Jenkins in the decider to claim the £5,000 cheque.

Andy Jenkins’ run was his best on the PDC Pro Tour since June 2005 and comes hot on the heels of his qualification for the European Championship a week ago.

Both players had travelled to Killarney following their exits in Frankfurt, along with first round victims Colin Lloyd and Jacko Barry, quarter-finalist Kevin Painter and ITV pundit Steve Beaton, who reached the last 16.

Kirk Shepherd enjoyed his best run of form since reaching the final of the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship, while quarter-final appearances for Felix McBrearty, Jamie Caven and Matt Clark continued their good recent form.

Michael van Gerwen, who won Saturday’s Gleneagle Irish Masters, fell in a deciding leg to Painter at the last 16 stage after the pair missed a host of match darts in a tense finish.

COLIN OSBORNE claimed his first Players Championship title of 2008 with a final-leg win over Carlos Rodriguez in the PartyPoker.net German Darts Trophy final.

Osborne has twice been a runner-up so far in 2008 in Players Championships, although he did win the Blue Square UK Open North-East Regional Final in January.

He added another £5,000 to his earnings in an impressive day of darts at the Stadthalle in Dinslaken.

He claimed 3-0 wins over Ben Burton and Michael Rosenauer and a 3-1 win over Peter Wright to reach the quarter-finals, where he dropped just one leg in seeing off Robert Thornton.

The Derby man then held off Mark Dudbridge’s fight-back from 2-0 down in the semi-finals to reach the final, where he also went all the way against Spaniard Rodriguez.

Rodriguez came from a leg down to win the first set with a 110 checkout, only for Osborne to take the next two sets in a deciding leg.

Rodriguez won the fourth without reply and came from a leg down to level in the decider, only for Osborne to land a maximum on his way to a 12-darter in sealing the win.

His win takes him up two places to a career-high 12th in the PDC Order of Merit.

Rodriguez secured his place in the European Championship in Frankfurt next weekend and a spot in the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship with his first run to a PDC Pro Tour final.

Having reached the last eight of the Scottish Players Championship last Sunday, he defeated John Jenkinson, Karsten Koch, Andy Jenkins and Steve Maish to reach the quarter-finals.

He then defeated Peter Manley and Kevin Painter 3-0 to reach the final, dropping just two legs in the process.

Osborne’s final-leg win over Dudbridge meant the Bristolian finished one game short of claiming a qualification place in the European Championship by just one game.

He enjoyed last-gasp wins over Mensur Suljovic and Alan Tabern and also overcame Colin Lloyd in reaching the last four, but fell two sets down to Osborne and then missed three darts for victory in the deciding leg after drawing level.

Painter’s display sees him move closer to the PDC’s top 16, and was his first semi-final appearance since June.

Tabern and Mark Walsh joined Manley and Thornton as losing quarter-finalists, while Tomas Seyler represented Germany in the last 16.

While Dudbridge missed out on a Players Championship qualification spot for the European Championship, he will be joined in Sunday’s knockout qualifier by Michael van Gerwen.

The Dutch youngster was denied one of the four places for players from the Continental Europe Order of Merit on a count-back after being tied with Jan van der Rassel, who joins Rodriguez, Mensur Suljovic and Jelle Klaasen in Frankfurt next weekend.

Quarter-Finals
Carlos Rodriguez wins through to his first PDC Pro Tour semi-final with a superb 3-0 win over Peter Manley, dropping just one leg and taking out 135 to win the match.
Colin Osborne also powered through to the semi-finals, losing only one leg in a 3-0 defeat of Robert Thornton.
Kevin Painter came from two sets down to defeat Mark Walsh and move into his first semi-final since June. Walsh won four of the opening five legs to put himself in command, but Painter edged the next two to level the game. He then took out 157 in the fifth set’s opener, and a two-dart 96 finish sealed the win.
Mark Dudbridge held off Alan Tabern’s fightback to claim victory in a final-leg quarter-final battle. Dudbridge took a two-set lead before Tabern, buoyed by an 11-darter to win set three, pulled level. The duo traded double top finishes to send the match into a sudden-death leg, but Dudbridge triumphed on tops.

Semi-Final
Carlos Rodriguez defeated Kevin Painter in straight sets to reach his maiden professional final. The Spaniard won the opening leg despite a maximum from Painter, and hit two 180s of his own in the second to take the set. He edged the second set in a deciding third leg on double 11, and finishes of double 16 and double four earned him a spot in the final.
Colin Osborne dramatically claimed victory in the second semi-final, defeating Mark Dudbridge in a sudden-death final leg of their contest. Osborne sailed into a two-set lead and led in the third thanks to a 111 finish, but missed one dart for the game in the next two legs as Dudbridge took the set. Double eight put the Bristol man in front in the next, before Osborne levelled with a 156 finish for a 12-darter and Dudbridge then won leg three with a 119 finish. Osborne set up a 36 finish with a key 165 score in the fifth set’s opener, before Dudbridge landed double ten to square matters and send the match into a decider. Three ton-plus scores edged Osborne clear, but misses at double top and double ten gave Dudbridge a reprieve, only for two misses at double top and one at double ten to give the Derby man one more chance, which he took with his third dart at double ten.
The result now means Dudbridge misses out on a Players Championship Order of Merit place for the European Championship – and he will have to take part in Sunday’s qualifier in an attempt to win one of the final two places.

CHARLES LOSPER has retained the Emperors Palace PDC South African Open title, with a 4-1 win over Mark Jackson seeing him earn a place in the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship.

Losper showed his status as the leading darts player in South Africa by claiming the title in the two-stage tournament, staged at the Emperors Palace Casino in Johannesburg, for a second successive year.

He was the leading player from the three-hour “Saturday Frenzy”, where 156 players battled to score a leg of 501 in the fewest possible darts, hitting a 12-darter to head the field.

Losper, an armed response unit policeman from Cape Town, then won the knockout phase featuring the top 16 players, claiming a 3-1 win over Mike Ryder Snr, a 3-0 whitewash of Paul Bann in the quarter-finals and a 3-2 defeat of Shawn Hogan with a superb 14-darter in the deciding leg of their semi-final.

He produced a 103 finish to open the final against Durban’s Mark Jackson, and moved 3-0 up before sealing a 4-1 victory.

Losper will now return to London’s Alexandra Palace in December to compete in the World Darts Championship for a second time, guaranteeing him a minimum of £2,500 prize money.

“This is amazing, I’m so happy,” said Losper. “I was pleased with how I played throughout the day and I’m so honoured to have won this tournament again.

“I feel more confident than I did last year and the experience I have probably helped me at the crucial times.”

Jackson overcame Les Francis 3-0 in the semi-finals, with finishes of 97, 79 and then 90, checking out on the bullseye, seeing him reach the final.

Hogan included a 110 finish in coming from 2-1 down to defeat Francois de Villiers 3-2 to reach the semi-finals – with the South African Open’s last four facing Phil Taylor, James Wade, John Part and Wayne Mardle in Sunday’s Emperors Palace South African Masters.

Losper will take on Mardle, while Hogan takes on Taylor, with Francis meeting James Wade and Jackson earning a clash with World Champion John Part.

The Emperors Palace South African Masters will be shown live in South Africa on SuperSport from 9pm-12am and in the UK on Nuts TV from 8pm-11pm – Sky channel 196 and freeview channel 42.
