Jaws Takes Canadian Masters

Posted on September 1st, 2010

COLIN LLOYD picked up his third tournament win of 2010 with a 6-1 defeat of Jamie Caven in the final of the Canadian Masters Players Championship.

The Essex star denied Caven back-to-back PDC ProTour titles to take the £5,000 first prize – continuing the form which saw him reach the European Championship semi-finals a month ago.

He showed his best form throughout the day, having missed double 12 for a nine-darter in his opening game, a 6-1 defeat of Jim Long, and then saw off Matt Clark by the same scoreline and Martin Tremblay 6-4 to reach the last eight.

There, he overcame Kevin Painter 6-4 and repeated that scoreline to see off in-form Wes Newton in the semi-finals, before sweeping past Caven in the decider.

Lloyd broke throw in the opening leg of the final before doubling his lead, and after Caven got off the mark in the third the former world number one took the fourth for a 3-1 cushion.

Another break gave him a 4-1 lead, and after Caven missed his chances in the next double 12 put him to the brink of victory, which was sealed in the seventh leg.

Caven followed up Saturday’s London Ontario Players Championship victory with a run to the final, as he took home £7,500 for his weekend’s work in Canada.

Canadian Joy For Caven

Posted on September 1st, 2010

JAMIE CAVEN took victory in Saturday’s London Ontario Players Championship in Canada to claim his third PDC ProTour title.

The Derby ace defeated Michael van Gerwen 6-4 in the final to round off a fine day of darts, which included a 6-2 semi-final win over Dennis Priestley – last week’s Australian Open Players Championship winner and the champion in Canada for the past two years.

Caven had overcome Dave Watson and John Morrison in the early rounds before seeing off Steve Evans 6-4 and Justin Pipe in a deciding leg to reach the last eight.

There he saw off Andy Hamilton 6-4 before overcoming Priestley in the semis and Dutch ace van Gerwen in the final.

Caven opened the final with a 130 finish, and took the next two legs before van Gerwen wired a 160 checkout as Caven took out 78 for a 4-0 cushion.

A 14-darter from van Gerwen saw him get off the mark in leg five, but Caven won the next and then missed four match darts as van Gerwen took the next and two more legs to reduce the gap to 5-4.

However, Caven was not to be denied and he took the tenth to seal victory and the £5,000 title.

Van Gerwen’s run was his best since last November as he reached the final and boosted his chances of qualifying for the World Grand Prix in October.

Priestley Turns Up Down Under

Posted on August 22nd, 2010

DENNIS PRIESTLEY defeated Mark Hylton 6-3 to win the Australian Open Players Championship in Sydney.

Priestley, who turned 60 last month, took the £5,000 title at the Revesby Workers Club in Sydney on Sunday – a triumph which will secure him a place in October’s World Grand Prix and edge him back towards the world’s top 16.

The two-time World Champion opened his challenge in Sydney with a whitewash of David Clegg and a 6-3 win over Heath Daley before edging out Steve Hine in a deciding leg in the last 16.

He then overcame top Australian Simon Whitlock 6-3 in the quarter-finals and edged out Paul Nicholson – last year’s Australian Open Players Championship winner – in another 11-leg tussle at the semi-final stage.

Priestley secured victory in the final with a 6-3 win over Mark Hylton, the Rugeley-based left-hander who had won through to his first PDC ProTour decider.

Hylton opened with wins over Australian pair Pat Orreal and Peter Asmussen, and then battled through a tricky path to the final – picking up wins over Robert Thornton and Mark Walsh before edging out Sean Reed 6-5 in the semis.

Although he went down in the final, Hylton’s run will almost certainly win him a Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship debut as a Players Championship Order of Merit qualifier, as well as increasing his hopes of winning a World Grand Prix spot.

Co Stomps on the Vegas Field

Posted on June 30th, 2010

CO STOMPE claimed his maiden PDC title with a 6-3 defeat of James Wade in Tuesday’s Las Vegas Players Championship.

The Dutch star picked up the £6,000 victory during the New Tropicana World Series of Darts Festival to celebrate his recent two-year anniversary since moving onto the PDC circuit.

He produced some outstanding darts during Tuesday’s event in Las Vegas, opening with a whitewash of Edwin Martin and then defeating Wayne Mardle, Adrian Lewis and Steve Beaton to set up an all-Dutch quarter-final with Jelle Klaasen.

After seeing off the former Lakeside Champion 6-4, Stompe whitewashed Matt Clark in the semi-finals before defeating Wade in the decider.

World number three Wade took the final’s opening leg, but Stompe hit back with four successive legs to lead 4-1, twice hitting two maximums in a leg.

Wade won the next two to reduce the gap to one leg, but Stompe crucially took the eight before securing victory in the next.

Wade’s run to the final bettered his semi-final appearance in Sunday’s PDC US Open Players Championship, as he claimed the £3,000 runner-up prize.

Vegas Win For Anderson

Posted on June 29th, 2010

GARY ANDERSON won his third tournament of 2010 with a 6-4 victory over Simon Whitlock in Monday’s Las Vegas Players Championship.

Anderson followed up a quarter-final appearance in Sunday’s PDC US Open Players Championship by taking the £6,000 first prize in the third of five days in the New Tropicana World Series of Darts Festival.

The victory continues a fine month for the Scot – who was the runner-up in the Rileys Darts Zones UK Open and also won a Players Championship in Barnsley.

After needing all 11 legs to defeat Mark Hylton in the first round at the Tropicana Hotel, Anderson then whitewashed fellow Scot Chris Loudon and Wales’ Mark Webster in progressing to the last 16.

Steve Maish and Paul Lim were also defeated before a 6-2 win over Colin Lloyd put him into the decider against Australian star Whitlock.

Holland’s The One For Pieman

Posted on June 20th, 2010

ANDY SMITH won his first Players Championship for a year with a 6-4 defeat of Alan Tabern at the Van Der Valk Hotel in Haarlem on Sunday.

Smith had been victorious on the corresponding weekend last year, in Dinslaken, Germany, and repeated his success to take the £6,000 title in Holland.

The world number 29 dropped only five legs in his opening three games, against Par Riihonen, Dennis Smith and Kevin Dowling, before whitewashing Steve Maish to reach the quarter-finals.

There, he defeated Kevin Painter 6-3 and came from 5-3 down to win in a deciding leg in the semi-finals against Steve Brown.

After securing an immediate break of throw in the final by winning the first leg, he hit a 180 in doubling his lead before Tabern got off the mark.

Tabern hit a maximum of his own in the fourth leg, but a missed bullseye allowed Smith in to take out 64 in two darts on double top.

Tabern enjoyed his best leg of the match with a 174 score and a 116 finish in pulling back to 3-2, while Smith shared the next two to remain ahead.

He then took a key eighth leg to move 5-3 up, hitting another maximum and then double four to move to the brink of victory.

Tabern landed a 180 and double ten to take the ninth, but Smith was first to a finish in the next and sealed the victory on double ten.

Tabern’s run saw him reach his first final since May 2009, and gives him hope of retaining a top 16 place for the StanJames.com World Matchplay next month.

After taking wins over Germany’s Jyhan Artut and Holland’s Mareno Michels, he defeated Denis Ovens, Simon Whitlock and Vincent van der Voort to reach the semis.

There, he pulled clear from two-all to win four successive legs in claiming a third Dutch scalp of the day, before Smith proved too strong in the final.

Brown was denied a place in his first ranking final in agonising circumstances as Smith came from 5-3 down to win 6-5 in their semi, with the Bristol man waiting on 24 in the deciding leg but never having a dart for victory.

However, the £1,000 strengthens his grip on a qualifying place for the StanJames.com World Matchplay and also improves his hopes of winning a spot in next month’s European Championship in Germany.

He defeated UK Open semi-finalist Tony Ayres, Andy Jenkins, Joe Cullen, Saturday’s runner-up Wayne Jones and Justin Pipe to reach the last four, his second PDC ProTour semi-final.

Taunton-based Pipe’s quarter-final appearance continued his recent run of form as he seeks to qualify for the World Matchplay, and included a victory over number one seed Wes Newton and defeats of the Spanish pair Carlos Rodriguez and Antonio Alcinas.

Leamington Spa’s Nigel Heydon also won through to the last eight, overcoming Steve Beaton, Arron Monk and Andy Hamilton in reaching his third PDC quarter-final.

Saturday’s champion Vincent van der Voort also reached the quarter-finals, losing to Tabern but taking his prize money for the weekend to £7,000.

Germany’s Bernd Roith made a late push for a European Championship qualifying place with his run to the last 16, which included a defeat of Paul Nicholson, while Ian White also reached that stage for the first time on the PDC ProTour.

Van Der Voort Wins In Holland

Posted on June 19th, 2010

VINCENT VAN DER VOORT won his second Players Championship of the year with a deciding leg defeat of Wayne Jones in Haarlem on Saturday.

The Dutchman saw off Jones to claim his maiden PDC title in March, and repeated his win to take the £6,000 title in Holland.

Van der Voort picked up early wins over Italian Sergio Pettarini, Denmark’s Vladimir Andersen in Haarlem before victories over English trio Kevin Painter, Colin Lloyd and Tony Eccles put him into the event’s semi-finals.

There, he whitewashed Mervyn King to win through to his fifth PDC final, hitting a brace of 12-darters in the process against the world number four.

While the final’s opening four legs were shared, van der Voort took command by winning the next two to lead 4-2.

Jones, though produced finishes of 102, 78 on the bullseye and 108 to move 5-4 up – before then missing two match darts at double eight in the next.

Van der Voort finished 86 on the bullseye to force a decider, where he was too strong to land double ten for the victory.

Jones finished as runner-up for a sixth time on the PDC ProTour as he continues his search for a maiden ranking title.

Hot Stuff For Rocket In Barnsley

Posted on June 13th, 2010

RONNIE BAXTER picked up his first Players Championship victory for almost 12 months with a narrow 6-5 defeat of Denis Ovens, sealing the win in Barnsley with an 11-dart finish.

Baxter has not reached a final since winning the Las Vegas Players Championship at the end of June 2009, but a fine display at the Barnsley Metrodome saw the Blackpool man take the £6,000 title.

He dropped only two legs in wins over Par Riihonen and Michael Smith to kick off Sunday’s event, before then going to the deciding leg in wins over Mark Dudbridge and Dennis Priestley as he reached the semi-finals.

Having already seen off one of his recent Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts rivals, Simon Whitlock, he then whitewashed Adrian Lewis in the last four to reach his maiden final of the year, hitting three 180s and a 150 checkout against the Stoke ace.

Ovens started the better in the final, breaking throw in the opening leg and doubling the lead – only for Baxter to hit back with finishes of 143 and 170 in winning three successive legs to lead 3-2.

He also won the next two to move to the brink of victory before Ovens punished missed match darts in two successive legs to pull back to 5-4, hitting a 122 checkout in the ninth.

Anderson Flies to Barnsley Win

Posted on June 13th, 2010

GARY ANDERSON won his second PDC ProTour event of 2010 with a 6-1 victory over Mark Walsh on Saturday in Barnsley.

The Scot followed up March’s UK Open Qualifier win with a fine display at the Barnsley Metrodome, backing up a run to the final of the Rileys Darts Zones UK Open last weekend to take the £6,000 title.

Anderson’s form was dominant from the start of the event, when he whitewashed Colin Monk and dropped only three legs in defeats of Jamie Atkins and Alan Tabern.

He then defeated Jamie Caven 6-2 in the last 16, dropped just one leg against Mervyn King in the quarter-finals before coming from behind to beat Justin Pipe 6-4 in the semis.

Anderson kicked off the final with a maximum in taking the opening leg in 13 darts, and finished 100 with two double tops for a 12-darter in taking the second leg.

He added another 180 in winning the third leg, and also won the next two for a 5-0 lead before Walsh finally got off the mark by winning the sixth.

Anderson, though, hit a third 180 of the final in leg seven, and double top for a 13-darter sealed the win.

Both poker and darts are highly popular pursuits. The games are available online, in fact, that there are organizations dedicated to making sure the rules of video poker and online darts are conformed. Similar to darts having the World Darts Federation, among others, and poker has the Tournament Directors Association. These rules are put into place in highly competitive tournaments, in which as many as hundreds or even thousands of people compete for cash prizes as well as prestige.
