Cash Converters Players Championship Schedule of Play

PLAYERSCHAMPS FNL TAYLORWINS21 238x300 Cash Converters Players Championship Schedule of PlayDARTS’ top names will descend on South Yorkshire next weekend for the Cash Converters Players Championship, which will be held from December 8-11 at the Doncaster Dome.

The £250,000 tournament will feature stars including 15-time World Champion Phil Taylor, Holland’s five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld, Premier League Darts champion Gary Anderson and world number three James Wade.

The tournament – screened live on ITV4 – will kick off on Thursday December 8, with the opening eight games from the first round being played.

Derby’s Jamie Caven will meet emerging star Scott Rand in the tournament’s opening game, with recent Grand Slam of Darts semi-finalist Mark Walsh facing Mark Hylton and Peter Wright playing Denis Ovens before three former World Champions enter the fray.

Dutch star van Barneveld clashes with Blackpool’s Ronnie Baxter, Canada’s three-time World Champion John Part meets Wolverhampton’s Wayne Jones and Wales’ former World Champion Richie Burnett plays UK Open runner-up Wes Newton.

2010 Players Championship Finals winner Paul Nicholson begins his bid for a second win in the event against Bristol’s Steve Brown, and June’s UK Open champion James Wade takes on Andy Smith.

Friday’s remaining eight first round games include reigning champion Taylor taking on Terry Jenkins, while Scotland’s world number four Anderson plays Michael van Gerwen.

Friday night opens with the all-St Helens battle befween debutant Dave Chisnall and Alan Tabern, with Colin Osborne playing Kevin Painter and Dutch pair Vincent van der Voort and Co Stompe then clashing.

Mervyn King, the 2010 runner-up, plays Colin Lloyd before number one seed Justin Pipe – the winner of three Players Championships in recent weeks – takes on John Henderson.

Former World Champions Mark Webster and Steve Beaton meet in the night’s other game, with the second round split across two sessions on Saturday December 10.

The tournament comes to a climax with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final split across two sessions on Sunday December 11 as players compete for the £60,000 title.

Players competed in 31 one-day Players Championship events during 2011 to qualify for the event, which features the leading 32 money earners from those tournaments.

However, world number five Simon Whitlock withdrew as he continues his recovery from a broken bone in his ankle, paving the way for John Henderson to compete in Doncaster, while Adrian Lewis missed out on qualification by one place in the Players Championship Order of Merit.

Taylor Completes Wigan Double

PHIL TAYLOR completed a clean sweep of Players Championship events in Wigan with a hard-fought 6-4 win over Justin Pipe to take Sunday’s title at the Robin Park Tennis Centre.

Taylor backed up Saturday’s Players Championship with another excellent display to take the £6,000 first prize for the second day running, coming from 4-2 down against Pipe in the final.

He began the event with 6-3 victories over Stephen Hardy and Brendan Dolan before defeating Wayne Jones by a 6-1 scoreline to reach the last eight.

Taylor then knocked out Steve Beaton with a 6-2 win and a 6-1 triumph against Wes Newton in the semi-finals set-up a clash against Pipe. Read the rest of this entry »

The Power Picks up Wigan Win

PHIL TAYLOR powered to his fourth Pro Tour title of the year with a 6-1 victory over Ronnie Baxter in Wigan on Saturday to collect the £6,000 first prize.

The world number one continued the fantastic form that he showed in Wolverhampton a week ago, where he captured his fourth Grand Slam title.

Taylor began the final by breaking Baxter’s throw with a 121 checkout and then converted a 77 finish to lead 2-0 and establish control.

The Stoke star continued that form in the third leg when he hit a maximum to reach a finish first. But unusually for Taylor, he was off-target with several attempts at doubles for a 3-0 lead and Baxter took the opportunity to nick the leg. Read the rest of this entry »

The 31-year-old played superbly throughout Sunday’s tournament, twice missing double 12 for a nine-dart finish – during a third round win over Ronnie Baxter and in his semi-final defeat of Co Stompe – before hitting six 180s in the final.

Pipe Cleans up in Crawley

JUSTIN PIPE won his third Players Championship in a month with a 6-3 defeat of Vincent van der Voort in Saturday’s PDC ProTour event at the K2 Centre in Crawley.

pipe crawley 300x291 Pipe Cleans up in CrawleyThe 39-year-old from Taunton won his maiden professional title at the start of October when he defeated Phil Taylor in Dublin, and after picking up another victory in Killarney since he completed a notable treble in the first of two Players Championships over the weekend.

Pipe enjoyed a memorable day in Crawley, following up victories over young duo Kirk Shepherd and Reece Robinson with wins over former World Champions Steve Beaton and Mark Webster to reach the semi-finals.

There, he overcame Matt Clark 6-3 before repeating the scoreline in the decider against van der Voort.

In a clash of contrasting styles, the quick-throwing Dutchman took the final’s first break in leg five to lead 3-2.

But Pipe punished a missed bullseye from the Dutchman to break back in leg six, hit a 13-darter to lead 4-3 and then hit double eight to move 5-3 up. Read the rest of this entry »

Mervyn King Wins in Benidorm

MERVYN KING defeated Wes Newton 6-3 to win his first Players Championship since January in the Spanish Darts Trophy at the Melia Hotel, Benidorm.

benidorm1 Mervyn King Wins in Benidorm King has spent much of 2011 battling tendinitis in his throwing elbow, but capped a recent return to form – which included a run to the semi-finals of Championship League Darts – by picking up the £6,000 first prize in Spain.

The 45-year-old began Sunday’s event with a whitewash of Spaniard Eduardo Gonzales, before defeating Steve Maish, Belgium’s Kurt van de Rijck, Ronnie Baxter and Colin Osborne to reach the semi-finals, where he saw off Jamie Caven 6-2.

In the final against Newton, King took the opening leg with a superb 138 finish before the Fleetwood ace levelled with a 97 checkout and hit double top to punish King’s misses and lead.

King broke back but was punished again in leg five as Newton hit double ten to lead 3-2. Read the rest of this entry »

Wade Wins Spanish Darts Trophy PC

JAMES WADE took Players Championship glory for a second successive Saturday with a 6-2 win over Raymond van Barneveld in the Spanish Darts Trophy.

Wade’s triumph secures his place in December’s Players Championship Finals in Doncaster, while van Barneveld also improved his qualification hopes by picking up £3,000 as runner-up.

The left-hander opened the day with a whitewash of Holland’s Mareno Michels, and saw off Gary Welding, Colin Osborne, Mensur Suljovic to reach the quarter-finals, where he came from 5-4 down to defeat Mark Webster. Read the rest of this entry »

Osborne Ends Title Drought in Gladbeck

COLIN OSBORNE defeated James Richardson 6-2 to win his first ranking title for almost two years in Sunday’s German Darts Classic Players Championship.

Osborne Richardson 300x226 Osborne Ends Title Drought in GladbeckOsborne last tasted victory when he won the Championship League Darts and a Players Championship in Irvine inside a month in late 2009, but ended that run by taking the £6,000 first prize at Gladbeck’s Van Der Valk Hotel.

Having defeated Meszaros Zsolt, Peter Martin and Kevin Munch in the early rounds, Osborne then saw off York’s Terry Temple 6-2 to win through to the quarter-finals.

He then defeated teenager Chris Aubrey 6-2 in the last eight and came from 2-0 down to win six straight legs in repeating the scoreline against Mark Walsh in the semi-finals.

Richardson, in his first professional final, led after breaking with a 14-darter in the opening leg, but Osborne took out 160 to level and punished misses from his opponent to win the next and lead 2-1. Read the rest of this entry »

Wade Denies Pipe’s Treble Dream in Gladbeck

JAMES WADE defeated Justin Pipe 6-3 to claim victory in Saturday’s German Darts Classic Players Championship.

The world number three claimed his first ranking win since the Speedy Hire UK Open in June, and his first Players Championship title since September 2010, with the triumph at Gladbeck’s Van Der Valk Hotel.

Second Players Championship For Pipe

JUSTIN PIPE won his second successive Players Championship by edging out Gary Anderson in the John McEvoy Gold Dart Classic final in Killarney.

GRANDPRIX RD1 PIPE1 Second Players Championship For PipeThe 39-year-old from Taunton had won his first professional title at a Players Championship in Dublin a fortnight ago, defeating Phil Taylor in the final.

He added a second £6,000 first prize to his collection with a battling win over another of the world’s top four players, Gary Anderson, to take the John McEvoy Gold Dart Classic Players Championship title from the Scot.

Having overcome local aces Jason Byrne and Kieran Keho and South Africa’s Devon Petersen in the early stages, he was pushed all the way to a deciding leg by John Henderson and Paul Nicholson and had defeated Scott Rand 6-3 in the quarter-finals.

In the final, Pipe’s regular practice partner Anderson edged into early 2-1 and 4-2 leads, and a 120 finish from the Scot put him a leg away from victory at 5-3. Read the rest of this entry »

Both poker and darts are highly popular pursuits. The games are available online, in fact, that there are organizations dedicated to making sure the rules of video poker and online darts are conformed. Similar to darts having the World Darts Federation, among others, and poker has the Tournament Directors Association. These rules are put into place in highly competitive tournaments, in which as many as hundreds or even thousands of people compete for cash prizes as well as prestige.
