The men and women go head-to-head in a best of 5 legs 501, straight start and double finish.
The tournament carries a very special bonus – the winners will qualify to represent the county in the 2012 Winmau World Masters and the Lakeside World Championships Qualifiers.

John Weller of Essex County Darts commented “The Essex Open has gone from strength to strength and, with Winmau’s support, we know that the future of the tournament looks very bright indeed! Colchester United have been extremely supportive and the venue is one of the finest in world darts”.

(read our recent Scott Waites interview here)

Having played ‘his final’ earlier in a belter of a match against Martin Adams in the semi, in which he finally beat the World Champion on the 8th time of asking, Scott Waites had an hour or two to gather himself together and prepare for the real final against BDO success story Winstanley. In beating Adams Scotty 2 Hotty achieved a single dart average of 34.23, a haul of 180′s and ton plus finishes and missed an opportunity for a 9 dart leg , throwing a comical 26 with 141 required!

Spurred on by partner Sally as always, Waites took the first set of the final, and with heavy scoring and big finishes quicky took the next, capitalising on Winstanleys numerous missed doubles. Winstanley eventually found the finishes but it was Waites who entered the interval in the enviable position of 3 sets to 1 in front.

Winstanley who booked his place in the final following a tense battle with Scotland’s Ross Montgomery in which he emerged a 5-4 victor, failed to take his opportunity after the break and allowed Waites to race into a 4-1 lead. The following sets were shared, but with scoreline at 5-2 it was difficult to see anything other than a Waites victory. This was further reinforced when he took the first leg of the 8th set with a 138 checkout.

Another chance for a Waites 9 dart leg went begging as his dart slipped into the treble 5 bed, however he finished the match in style with a 11 and 12 dart legs culminating in a 161 checkout for a £25,000 check and most importantly the title of Winmau World Masters Champion 2011. Winstanley didnt bring his best game to the table but was the first to acknowledge a great performance from Waites, who achieved a tournament average of just over 100. This victory will add further fuel to the ongoing debate on whether or not Waites will switch to ply his trade in the promised land of the PDC. However, Scott has indicated he wants a Lakeside World Title before considering a switch, and on current form that looks a real possibility come January.

Earlier in the day Glen Durrant opened the afternoon session and his quarter final challenge with Martin Adams with a 12 dart leg, finishing 128 on the bull and went on to take the first set. However Wolfie settled down to business and took the next 3 sets without reply. Not without offering chances though, in the final leg he missed several match darts but Durrant couldn’t find the form to capitalise. Scott Waites struggled against Gary Robson but somehow emerged victorious as Robson Led 1-0 and 2-1 before the match concluded in a final leg thriller. Robbo missed two match darts at D20, before Waites stepped up under pressure and took out Bull, S12, D16 for a brilliant 94 finish to earn his semi-final place.

A very different Winstanley came out firing with 180’s and took the first leg with 12 darts, swiftly backed up with the first set against Tony West who then levelled, and again to make it 2-2 sets a piece and force the final set. At 1 each in the 5th set the pair bulled up, with Winstanley getting the advantage of throwing first and forged well ahead, but as the leg progressed both players had darts to win but Dean held his nerve to take the spoils. In the afternoons other quarter final Stephen Bunting lost out to Ross Montgomery 3 sets to nil in match that he will want to forget.

Please find below the official BDO reports of the days play.

MENS SEMI-FINALS

Martin Adams and Scott Waites were first up as Martin looked to making it a record-breaking fourth Masters in succession. Scott was favourite to win the first set, but made a mess of his checkout to allow Martin to step in and take the first set with a 68 checkout.
Martin then went 2-0 up insets but in the deciding leg of the third set Scott was up for a 9-darter after back to back 180’s. It wasn’t to be but he still took the set to make it 2-1. In the next before the first break of the match he took out a 121 bull finish to level at 2-2.
Scott came out of the break to win the first leg of the 5th set, but a 130 checkout from Adams levelled the score at 1-1 but a resurgent Scott took the next to take the lead for the first time in the match 3-2. With a drop in his usual consistency Martin lost the first leg of the 6th set and Scott opened the next with a 180, but a 93 checkout from Adams put him back on track. A 180/140 combination in the next and a d-18 finish levelled the match yet again at 3 sets apiece.
Another 180 in the first leg of the 7th set for Adams continued what can only be described as a ding-dong battle of the very best in world darts, A 122 finish from Scott put him back in front 4-3 and has was one set away from taking away Wolfie’s dream of four in a row. Scott then checked out the perfect shangai 120 to take the first leg and a 180 in the next made it the end of the road for a brave Adams, who managed a smile as he exited the 2011 Masters still holding that proud record of three titles in a row with Bob Anderson.
Scott Waites now moves into his first Masters final. He hit eight 180’a and had a single dart average of 34.23 (the best of this year’s Masters so far) and outshots of 121, 122 and 120. Martin Adams had a 33.45 average, hit four 180’s and a 130 outshot.
An always gracious Adams was the first to acknowledge Scott’s outstanding victory.

Martin Adams v Scott Waites match stats.PDF

Dean Winstanley and Ross Montgomery raced into a 1-1 scoreline in the opening set, but a 180 in the next and a missed 150 check from Ross right on the wire of d-15, gave Dean the opening set.
Shared legs and a drop in form, together with a messed up checkout cost Dean dearly when Ross checked out on 114 for the second set. Dean then won the next 2 legs and the third set with a cracking 133 checkout to go 2-1 up.
A 60 checkout gave Ross the 1st leg of the next, followed by a 61 to make it 2-2 as they went for the first break. In a messy set after the break both ended up on single 5 in the second leg, but it was Ross who checked out to make it 3-2 to the Scot. Then Dean hit back with relentless scoring to make it 3-3, but then struggled in the next to find any telling form as Ross made it 4-3.
The inconsistency continued in the next, but Dean lifted the mood with a 180 and a 2-0 legs victory to go 4-4. But Dean was still unhappy with his form and both struggled in the opening leg of the 9th set before ending on d-1 which Ross ultimately took out. Inevitably the deciding set ending with a tie-break on 4-4 in sets and 1-1 in legs. Dean won the bull-up and finished on a 62 checkout for the victory and a place in the final for two Yorkshireman in their home county.

Dean Winstanley v Ross Montgomery match stats.PDF

MEN’S QUARTER-FINALS
The climax of the 2011 Winmau World Masters, shown live and exclusively on ESPN, started with the Men’s Quarter Finals and Semi-Finals, followed the the two big Finals – the Women’s World Masters and the Men’s World Masters. All played on Sunday, September 4th at Hull Arena to produce a true festival of World Darts.
First game up, No.1 Seed and reigning World Masters Champion MARTIN ADAMS versus Glen Durrant ranked 134th in the BDO Invitation Table, who enjoyed an outstanding 3-1 victory against No.8 Seed John Walton on the previous day, when his single-dart average was 32.46.
In the opening leg Glen won the game with a 128 bull finish to announce his arrival. But the experienced Adams levelled at 1-1 before a determined Glen took the first set with a double-top finish and then hit his first 180 in the first leg of the 2nd set. But it was Martin who won that leg and then the set.
Martin broke Glen’s throw to open the third set, as the high-scoring from both players continued at a pace as Martin moved into gear to go 2-1 up. Martin then missed double 16 to take the match and Glen levelled at 1-1 in the crucial 4th set. After a valiant battle it was Adams who stayed on course for his record-breaking fourth Masters title with double 10 to be the first player to claim a Semi-Final spot.
There was nothing to choose between Gary Robson and Scott Waites in the second of the Quarter Finals with both scoring high and finishing well to go 1-1 in legs in the opening leg, but it was Big Robbo who put the first set on the board. Scott then took the second set and narrowly missed a 120 checkout to win the opening leg of the thirds set only to see Gary win the leg on double16. He then won the 3rd set with a brilliant 121 checkout to go 2-1 up in the match. Scott won the 1st leg of the 4th set with the aid of another 180 and then checked out 72 to make it 2-2 in sets. He then started the 5th set with his fourth 180 to go 1-0 up in legs, but Gary hit back again to force the tie-breaker. Gary won the bull-up but missed d-20 for the match and could do nothing as Scott took out a pressure 94 to win the match and move into the Semi-Final against Martin Adams with another impressive 32.44 single dart average.

Dean Winstanley was back to his devastating best as he won the first leg of his match against 2003 World Master Tony West with two 180’s and a d-18 finish. and then made short work of winning the opening set. But it was Tony who opened the 2nd set with a 180 and a 70 checkout. Dean levelled at 1-1 in legs and then missed double tops as Tony took the set with d-16 to make the match all square at 1-1 in sets. Dean took the next set in this nip and tuck high scoring battle and then an 83 finish from Tony made it 2-2 in sets. A 180 and 140 helped Tony level the next for the second tie-break of the Quarter-Finals. Dean won the bull-up and after missing d-16 went on to go through with d-8 in a match that didn’t deserve a loser.

No.6 Seed Ross Montgomery, the only Scot in the Quarter-Finals, won the first set against the unseeded Stephen Bunting who was struggling with his form. Ross won the second set, but the first leg of the 3rd set went to Bunting who then missed his doubles to let Ross level at 1-1. He opened the deciding leg of the set with a 180 but a dip in form and missed doubles cost him the match 3-0 and Ross moved into his Semi-Final with Dean Winstanley.

As you might expect the seeds mostly had it their own way with only John Boy Walton and Robbie ‘Kong’ Green failing to progress. Not that there wasn’t some close encounters, Tony West and Ross Montgomery in particular had to work hard as their respective opponents took them all the way including match darts. Reigning Masters and BDO World Champion Martin Adams started slowly losing the opening set but soon found his rhythm to book a quarter final place.

Scott Waites impressed with some big finishes, 170 backed later with a 164 as he achieved the first of the nights 2 whitewashes. The other coming from Dean Winstanley in his defeat of Rick Hofstra. In a true heavyweight clash (slightly delayed by Bunting failing to get his darts safely onto the stage), Robbie Kong Green became the second seeded casualty although his contest v Bunting was perhaps not such a mismatch as some of the other of the nights games.

Official BDO Saturday report World Masters

Martin Adams started his quest to win a record-breaking four consecutive Men’s Masters titles by losing the opening set, but he made no mistake by taking the next 3 to open his account with a 3-1 victory against Steve Douglas and march into Sunday’s Quarter Finals with an opening match single dart average of 31.59.
John Walton had a tough start by losing the first set of his match against Glen Durrant 2-0 and it wasn’t until the second leg of the second set that he put his first leg on the board, but still lost the set to the high-scoring Durrant who hit back to back 180’s to go 2-0 up in sets. The in-form Durrant then went on to take out No.8 Seed Walton with an impressive performance which included five 180’s and a 116 checkout to move on to Sunday’s Quarter Finals, where he will need to maintain his form to take on No.1 Seed Martin Adams. Glen’s single dart average was an impressive 32.46.
Gary Robson confirmed his No.5 seeding status with an impressive 3-1 victory over Andrew Gilding . England’s Scott Waites, seeded No.4, won the first set of his match with Scotlland’s Ewan Hyslop and then hit a 170 checkout to take the 1st leg of the second set, only to see Ewan level up the set at 1-1. But there was no stopping Scott as he made it 2-0 in sets. Scott then hit a 164 checkout to take the 2nd leg of the third set and complete a storming performance to win the match 3-0 with a single dart average of 32.13. His Quarter-Final opponent on Sunday is Gary Robson.
No.2 Seed Dean Winstanley overcame a slow and nervous start to win the first set of his match against Dutchman Rick Hofstra and then enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 victory to progress into the Quarter-Finals.

The magical 170 checkout was recorded for the second time in Saturday’s matches when Dutchman Christian Kist hit the highest outshot in the opening set of his match with Tony West. It was his 14th match of the weekend (World Masters and Lakeside Play-Offs). This high calibre match produced at 120 checkout (20 double bullseye) and two 112 checkouts from the fast-throwing West. The score moved to 2-2 in sets and 1-1 in legs for a thrilling tie break. The bull-up was won by Christian who was down to a double before Tony, but the relentless West checked out with a 106 to make the scoreline 3-2 to Tony, who moves into the Quarter Finals and Kist had to be content with the fact that he is now qualified for Lakeside 2012. There were nine 180’s in the match and Kist had a 31.24 single-dart average and Tony a 31.91 single dart average.
Scotland’s Ross Montgomery, the No.6 Seed lived up to his nickname of the Boss by taking the first set in his match against Martin Phillips of Wales. But the Welsh left-hander quickly levelled the scoreline to 1-1 in sets. With Martin on his favoured double-top the odds were on him going 2-1, but he missed and Ross stepped in to take the set to put him in the driving seat at 2-1. A 121 checkout then gave Martin the next set to level again at 2-2 in sets. A 107 checkout gave Ross the opening leg of the next only to see Martin level once more at 1-1 and the bull-up was won by Ross who went on to win with double 10 for a 3-2 victory.
The Robbie Green and Stephen Bunting match was billed as the battle of the giants for good reason, but when Stephen got to the stage he discovered that he’d lost a dart on his walk-on! Thankfully it was found and taken to an embarrassed Mr.Bunting!! Despite the comical start, it didn’t stop him hitting a 180 in the first leg, but Robbie matched it and then took out 83 with a bull finish. Game on!
Robbie won the 1st set, but it was nip and tuck all the way as Stephen won the 1st leg of the second set with a bull finish of his own, only to see Robbie level at 1-1 in legs before Stephen won the 2nd set. Then after a bout of severe double-trouble Stephen took the next set to go 2-1 up. And then he dominated the last set to win 3-1 and remove the No.3 Seed from the Masters. It means that 6 Seeds are moving into the Quater-Finals with the loss of the No.3 and No.8 Seeds.

Quarter-Finals: Sunday, September 4th:

MARTIN ADAMS (1) v GLEN DURRANT
GARY ROBSON (5) v SCOTT WAITES (4)
DEAN WINSTANLEY (2) v TONY WEST (7)
ROSS MONTGOMERY (6) v STEPHEN BUNTING

He did enough to beat Peter Johns (who earlier knocked out Tony O’Shea) three sets to nil, and sets up a heavyweight clash with Robbie ‘Kong’ Green.

Steve Douglas has the daunting task of taking on reigning Champion Martin Adams, Adams will be fired up and confident as he enters the Hull Arena on the back of a 13-12 victory over current PDC World Champion Adrian Lewis, in an exhibition match at the Circus Tavern.

The 2011 Winmau World Masters will be staged at Hull Arena on September 1-4 and for the first time in nine years will not be shown on the BBC. ESPN have taken the exclusive rights which means Ray Stubbs will be reunited with the tournament he presented for the BBC.

The tournament will be televised over three days (2nd to 4th) in a new extended agreement and is ESPN’s first foray into live televised darts. 2010 champion, Martin Adams, will be going for this fourth consecutive title but this deal means less people will be able to watch his historic quest.

The press releases dress this move up as a good one but any change that takes darts away from terrestrial television is a backwards step.

“We are delighted to be forging a new and innovative broadcasting relationship with ESPN” said BDO Managing Director, Olly Croft. “This deal heralds a new era of television exposure for BDO darts and its players.”

It is indeed a new era – one where the BBC further distance themselves from the BDO. Does this put the Lakeside World Championship in jeopardy? Having said that, the BBC coverage over the past couple of years has been shocking with much hidden behind the red button. ESPN’s coverage should be a marked improvement, it is just a shame that so many people will be deprived the chance to watch.

For the players, appearing on the BBC twice a year puts them in front of potentially millions. This is attractive for potential sponsors. Appearing on ESPN puts them in front of a fraction of the BBC’s reach and is likely to have a direct impact on securing sponsorship.

Details about the terms or length of the deal have not been made public but ESPN state they are looking at more darts rights, along with snooker and cricket. A new sports channel has been mooted to accommodate the additional coverage.

Also unclear at the moment is whether the format of the tournament will change. With an extra day of coverage will they be screening the board finals on the Friday? The top eight seeds go straight into the Last 16 on Saturday with quarter finals the same day. The semi finals and final are played on the Sunday.

There is a bit more information to come no doubt, a fuller ESPN statement in particular, but one can’t help feeling that this is another blow to the BDO who are maintaining that this was a decision taken rather than being dropped by the BBC.

The 2009 BDO WINMAU WORLD MASTERS, in association with John Smiths and East Riding of Yorkshire Council, will be played at The Spa Bridlington on September 4th , 5th & 6th – with the last 16 in the Mens World Masters enjoying extensive BBC TV coverage over the weekend of Saturday, September 5th and Sunday, September 6th.

The 2009 BDO Winmau World Masters will once again be the richest two-day tournament on terrestrial TV with record-breaking prize money, and the September dates have been agreed in order to provide the 2009 World Masters with the best possible scheduling times from BBC TV. They will also provide a longer gap between the World Masters and the BDO Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships, scheduled for nine consecutive days on BBC TV from January 2nd to 10th, 2010.

We are delighted that the BBC are screening the 36th BDO Winmau World Masters on a weekend that will provide us with the optimum amount of airtime on both the Saturday and Sunday, says Olly Croft, Managing Director of BDO Enterprises Ltd.

The Masters always enjoys excellent TV audiences. Last year it attracted an average audience of 1 million on the Saturday with a peak of 1.5m. On Sunday the average was 1.2m with a peak of 1.8m for the final.

We will be looking to build on those figures this year and, with the World Master (or standby player) gaining entry to the 2010 World Pro, there is an important and solid link between the BDOs two top BBC televised majors.

Staged and promoted by the British Darts Organisation, the Winmau World Masters have been played in Bridlington since 2002 and will be returning to The Spa for the second year since its 20 million re-development.

We now regard Bridlington as the true home of the World Masters, says Ian Flack, Sales & Marketing Director of Winmau. The Spa is a wonderful venue and the support of East Riding of Yorkshire Council has played a major part in their success.

I am also delighted to confirm that we have signed a 3-year contract with John Smiths to continue as our associate sponsors.

Gareth Turner, Senior Brand Manager, Ale, Scottish & Newcastle UK says: John Smith’s are delighted to have agreed the new three-year contract with Winmau to continue as associate sponsors of the World Masters. This is a perfect fit in our darts portfolio, which includes our valued involvement with Bob Potter and the Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships.

We are also fully committed to promoting darts in pubs and clubs across the country through the John Smith’s People’s Darts initiative. In January this produced our first ever John Smiths Peoples Darts Champion, Tim Teapot Jones, who will be competing in the 2009 World Masters as a sponsors invite.

We are delighted that they all combine to strengthen our relationship with the sport of darts and the British Darts Organisation.”

Alan Menzies Director of Planning and Economic Regeneration for East Riding of Yorkshire Council says: East Riding of Yorkshire Council and East Yorkshire Events are extremely pleased that the BBC has once again agreed to screen the 2009 Winmau World Masters from The Spa, Bridlington. We believe the new September dates will allow us to showcase this amazing event to an even wider audience than ever before.

We are also excited to announce a new five year sponsorship deal with Winmau to keep the World Masters at its true spiritual home of The Spa, Bridlington.
This continues East Riding of Yorkshire Councils commitment of bringing top class events to the area and further enhances East Yorkshire Events reputation at the forefront of event delivery.

The BDO Winmau World Masters is a true World Championship with players from seventy countries being invited, including singles darts champions from over 140 national and international events worldwide.

Approximately 400 players will converge on Bridlington for this years World Masters, which will mark the 36th anniversary of the oldest established major in world darts (1974-2009).

The World Masters are the only major Championships in darts with four separate finals – Men, Women, Boys and Girls.

FOR SEEDING AND DRAW PURPOSES, THE CLOSING DATE FOR ALL ENTRIES IS: FRIDAY, JULY 31ST, 2009

WOLFIE IS WORLD MASTER

England’s Martin Adams beat Scott Waites 7-6 in a thrilling final to claim the Winmau World Masters..

Adams, who lost to Michael van Gerwen in the 2006 final, missed three darts for the match but eventually hit double 16 to claim the title.

There was never more than a set between the players and it needed two extra legs in the final set to split them.

But the 2007 BDO world champion Adams, 52, held his nerve to collect a winner’s cheque for 25,000.

The number three seed, who averaged more than 105 to beat Tony O’Shea in the semi-finals, was never behind after the third set, but nor did he look certain of victory.

After the first two sets went with the darts, Waites – who beat Robert Wagner in his semi-final, broke the throw in the third set – hitting a 127 out-shot in the process.

But he failed to take full advantage, failing to get down from 58 with three darts in the decisive leg of the fifth set, allowing Adams to level.

The pair continued to trade sets and out-shots, Adams hitting a 160 to claim a 1,000 prize for the highest checkout and, more importantly, the seventh set.

Adams missed the bull when going for a 121 out-shot in the next set allowing Waites to level yet again as the match headed, seemingly inexorably, towards a decider.

Waites though was always under the pressure of throwing to remain level and at 6-5 down must have feared the worst as Adams put in a strong set to close on the title.

However, with the title just 20 points away and with three darts in his hand Adams threw a loose dart into the double 15 bed to bust and give Waites the chance to level again. Nervelessly he hit 96 to level the set and the same finish in the next leg to win it.

The final set reached 1-1 in legs after Adams missed a 118 out-shot, forcing decider legs with one player having to be two legs clear.

And this time Adams’ nerve held as he held his own leg and then hit the double to win the title.

Quarters and Semi Finals

Martin Adams was the highest seed left standing as BDO world champion Mark Webster and number one seed Gary Anderson both crashed out of the Winmau World Masters at the last-16 stage.

Wales’s Webster lost 3-1 to Scottish qualifier Ross Montgomery, while Anderson was beaten 3-1 by Norway’s Robert Wagner.

Montgomery’s joy was short-lived though as he lost his quarter-final 3-1 to Tony O’Shea, who had earlier defeated Ted Hankey 3-1 in the last 16. O’Shea will meet Adams in the semi final on Sunday.

‘Wolfie’ came from 2-0 down in the last 16 to sneak past Martin Atkins who missed doubles to let him in. Adams then found an easier passage past Steve Farmer, winning 3-0 to make it through to the semis and a clash with ‘Silverback’.

Scott Waites also progressed to complete the semi-final line up. Waites beat Cor Ernst 3-1 in the last 16 before getting past Steve West by the same score in the quarter final.

He will meet Wagner in the semi final and will have his work cut out. The Norwegian averaged over 100 in his demolition of Joey ten Berge in the quarter final and is looking in good form.
