Whitlock, though, hit back brilliantly to level at seven-all by taking five successive legs to threaten an incredible comeback win.

The Australian – who landed a nine-darter in his 8-6 semi-final win over Andy Hamilton earlier in the night – crucially missed one dart to lead Taylor 8-7, as the Stoke great recovered to win the leg and the next two to claim victory.

“It feels fantastic to be the McCoy’s Premier League champion again,” said Taylor, who had lost in the semi-finals last year to Adrian Lewis.

“It was a massive night for all four of us in the semi-finals and in many ways it was a strange final.“The semi-final took a lot of out me, because for some reason I was nervous and it was a real battle against James. Simon had put in a huge effort too in his game and maybe that showed in the final.

“Simon came back brilliantly but I think that used up a lot of his energy, and even when he got level I knew that I had the throw and just had to keep myself steady, and thankfully I came through.”

Taylor had hit averages of 117.35 – a Premier League record – and 116 during the league season, but dipped below 100 in both games in the Play-Offs.

“I’m disappointed with my performances, even though I’m delighted to win,” he added. “I set myself some high standards this year and I want to play consistently at that level.

“I’ll have a couple of weeks now to relax and prepare for the UK Open at the start of June, and winning back that title’s my next goal.”

Despite the efforts of his semi-final, and a cameo appearance to sing along to the performance of Chas Hodges & The Premier League Boys’ charity single ‘Got My Ticket For The Darts’ on stage before the final, Taylor made a superb start to the decider.

He punished four missed doubles from Whitlock to win the opening leg on double four before posting back-to-back 14-darters in moving 3-0 up.

Whitlock took out 96 on double eight to get off the mark in the fourth, but Taylor hit a 180 before taking out 81 on tops to win the next for a 4-1 cushion.

Taylor then punished two misses from Whitlock to win the sixth on the bullseye and took out 109 to seal the next for a 6-1 advantage.

Whitlock set up a double 12 finish with a 174 score as he took leg eight, but despite a 180 from the Australian in the next it was Taylor who landed double eight for a 7-2 lead.

Misses at double top in the next two allowed Whitlock to step in and pull back to 7-4, before the Australian landed a 180 and finished 80 on double ten to win his fifth leg.

He then broke Taylor’s throw for a second time as the world number one missed three darts to halt Whitlock’s charge, before the 2010 World Championship finalist powered in a maximum and a 120 finish to incredibly level the match.

Whitlock also gave himself a chance to move ahead in leg 15, but missed double 16 for a 149 checkout – ironically the finish Taylor took out against Wade in the semis to break a six-all deadlock – as the Stoke great stepped in on tops.

Taylor then opened the next leg with a 171 and took out 96 to lead 9-7 before adding a 180 and taking out 73 to reclaim the trophy.

“I did well to fight back and get it back to seven-all, but I had one chance to go in front and missed, and before I knew it, it was all over,” said Whitlock.

“It’s very tough to play two games like that in one night, especially when the semi-final was so tight. Phil struggled as well as he had a very hard semi-final.

“It’s been a fantastic McCoy’s Premier League though and I’m really proud to have reached the final. I think the two best players reached the final.

“It means a lot to be in the final against Phil. I tried my best but I wasn’t good enough on the day, but I’m over the moon with how the season’s gone.

“I’ll never forget the nine-darter. I’ve thrown a couple of nine-darters before in front of big crowds but not in front of 10,000 fans, so it was special.”

Whitlock’s nine-darter came in the second leg of his semi-final with Premier League newcomer Hamilton, who had finished third in his debut season and led the Australian 4-1 – with the nine-darter being the only leg he took in the opening five.

He pulled back to 5-4 before Hamilton posted a 110 checkout to move 6-4 up – but Whitlock took the next four in thrilling fashion to earn his place in the final.

“It’s been a great journey and I’ve enjoyed every single minute of this Premier League,” said Hamilton. “I’ve fought again tonight but Simon fought back and showed true resilience, and it was a great game to have a nine-darter against me.

“I can’t complain. I’ve had a great match and Simon was a worthy winner – it could have gone my way but it didn’t, and I feel privileged to have played in such a great arena alongside some great players, and hopefully I’ll be back in the Premier League next year.”

Taylor was also pushed all the way by 2009 champion Wade in their last-four contest, with the left-hander leading 4-2 at one stage.

Taylor moved 6-4 up before Wade levelled, but the game turned on a stunning 149 checkout by the world number one, who then finished double top to seal his place in the final.

McCOY’S PREMIER LEAGUE DARTS SEMI-FINALS
SIMON WHITLOCK 8-6 ANDY HAMILTON
SIMON WHITLOCK hit an incredible nine-dart finish and came from 4-1 down to win through to the McCoy’s Premier League Darts final with an 8-6 defeat of Andy Hamilton.

The Australian landed the perfect finish in only the second leg of the contest – hitting two 180s and finishing 141 on double 18 – only to then find himself three legs down after Hamilton began the game with some flawless finishing.

Whitlock, though, clawed his way back in before taking the lead for the first time at 7-6, and took the next to erase the memory of his semi-final defeat in 2010 and win through to the decider.

The game began in incredible fashion, with Hamilton winning the first leg with a 130 checkout before opening the second with a 180 – only for Whitlock to reply with two maximums before finishing 141 to land an amazing nine-darter, bringing 10,000 fans at The O2 to their feet.

Hamilton refused to blink despite the achievement, finishing 112 to break back in leg three and hitting 180s in the next two legs as finishes of double top and double 16 put him 4-1 without either player missing a dart at a double.

Whitlock hit a 180 and tops to hit back, and then finished double ten to pull back to within a leg before Hamilton landed a maximum and double seven to lead 5-3.

Hamilton also hit a 180 in the ninth leg, but was punished for three misses as Whitlock posted double six to hit back – only for a 110 finish to see the Stoke ace move 6-4 up.

Whitlock replied with a superb 12-darter before levelling the game in a dramatic 12th leg, as Hamilton saw his dart at double top land agonisingly just in double one, allowing Whitlock to level.

Hamilton then missed double 18 and double nine in the next as Whitlock landed double nine to lead for the first time, before he sealed victory by taking out 76 on double 18.

“I’m so happy to be in the final and it was a fantastic match,” said Whitlock. “Andy’s had a great year and has played brilliantly – and I had to throw a nine-darter there just to win a leg!

“But I battled and fought my way back in and got the win in the end.”

Hamilton said: “It’s been a great journey and I’ve enjoyed every single minute of this Premier League.

Leg-By-Leg
0-1 – Hamilton wins the opener against the throw with a brilliant 130 checkout, finished on double five.
1-1 – Both players open with 180s, with Hamilton landing a 140 before Whitlock lands another maximum to set up a nine-dart chance – AND HE FINSHES 141 FOR A NINE-DARTER!
1-2 – Hamilton finishes 112 to win the third leg – a third successive ton-plus finish!
1-3 – Hamilton posts tops to remain flawless in his finishing and move two legs clear.
1-4 – Hamilton lands double 16, hitting his fourth successive double at the first time of asking to maintain a 106 average.
2-4 – Whitlock hits his third 180 of the game and finishes tops to hit back going into the interval.
3-4 – Hamilton fails to pressure Whitlock, who misses three darts at tops but returns to land double ten to pull back to within touching distance.
3-5 – Hamilton hits a 180, and this time has the cushion to miss five darts at a double before landing double seven.
4-5 – Hamilton opens with a 180 but misses the bull for a 90 finish to break – only for Whitlock to miss double six to hit back. Hamilton misses double eight and four, and Whitlock lands double six to hold throw in a crucial leg.
4-6 – Hamilton hits his third ton-plus finish of the game by taking out 110 on double 18.
5-6 – Whitlock hits back, hitting a 180 to leave 84, which he finishes with a bullseye, double 17 combination.
6-6 – Whitlock leaves 84 again, but misses the bull to complete a 16, 18, bullseye combination – but Hamilton misses double top in double one, and Whitlock finishes tops to level the game.
7-6 – Hamilton hits 140, 137 and 140 to leave 87, but misses double 18 and double nine to break, and Whitlock finishes double nine for a 14-darter to lead for the first time.
8-6 – Whitlock completes an amazing comeback by finishing 76 on double 18.

PHIL TAYLOR 8-6 JAMES WADE
PHIL TAYLOR was forced to battle from behind before defeating James Wade 8-6 to reach the McCoy’s Premier League Darts final.

Taylor has finished top of the league table this season after dropping only four points in the weekly rounds, but was facing the prospect of a second successive semi-final exit in the tournament when Wade took a 4-2 lead.

Taylor battled back to lead 6-4 before Wade levelled, but a stunning 149 checkout turned the game in the world number one’s favour, and he finished 80 in the next leg to set up a final against Simon Whitlock.

“It was a struggle from start to finish,” admitted Taylor. “I felt very, very nervous and maybe the venue and the occasion put me under pressure.

“I just didn’t feel comfortable up there. I was maybe trying too hard, and when you try too hard they don’t go in. When you relax, the darts flow and they go in.”

Wade, with the advantage of throw, held the early cushion with finishes of 87 and 104 as he took a 2-1 lead, with Taylor having finished 112 in the second leg before landing double eight in the fourth.

The pair traded 180s in the next, with Taylor missing double eight to break as Wade landed double ten to lead 3-2, before the left-hander swooped on a rare score of 30 from Taylor in leg six, hitting a 180 with his next visit before landing double five for a 4-2 cushion.

Taylor hit back in style, landing a 177 in a 14-darter to win the seventh against the throw and tops to level before taking the next two following misses from Wade to move ahead for the first time at 6-4.

The pair traded 180s again in the 11th leg, as Wade hit back on double 12 before then squaring the match with a break of throw on double ten.

Wade also left himself 58 after 12 darts in the next, but could only watch on as Taylor hammered home a 149 checkout to break and lead 7-6 before coolly landing tops to move into the final.

Leg-By Leg
0-1 – Wade finishes 87 for a confident opening leg.
1-1 – Taylor takes out 112 to level the game.
1-2 – Wade checks out 104 to hold throw, with Taylor waiting on 40 to break.
2-2 – Taylor lands double eight to level the contest.
2-3 – The pair trade 180s, with Wade missing the bull for a 161 finish before returning to hit double ten after Taylor missed double eight to break.
2-4 – Wade pounces on a score of 30 from Taylor by hitting a 180 to leave 81 after nine darts, and eventually lands double five to break throw and lead by two at the interval.
3-4 – Taylor opens the leg with a 177 and, when Wade misses tops for a 108 checkout, he returns to land double eight for a 14-darter to break.
4-4 – Taylor levels the game by hitting tops at the first time of asking to nudge his average over 100.
5-4 – Taylor misses double five for a 130 finish, but Wade is unable to post double 18 for a 116 finish, and Taylor posts double five with his third dart to lead for the first time – and his celebration shows how much the leg means.
6-4 – Wade hits a 180 to leave 64, but when Taylor misses double 16 the left-hander cannot finish tops. Taylor returns and misses three darts outside double eight, but the drama intensifies as Wade misses double ten and two darts at double five, and Taylor lands double eight to win a key leg.
6-5 – Taylor opens with a 180, but Wade matches the maximum, and although he misses double 12 for a 125 checkout he returns to hit the bed for a 14-darter.
6-6 – Wade breaks back immediately, missing the bull for a 164 finish but returning to the oche to land double ten to level.
7-6 – Taylor takes out a superb 149 checkout to move a leg away from the final.
8-6 – Taylor finishes 80 on tops to seal his place in the final.

McCOY’S PREMIER LEAGUE DARTS FINAL
PHIL TAYLOR 10-7 SIMON WHITLOCK
Leg-By-Leg
0-1 – Whitlock misses four darts at a double to break, and Taylor lands double four to win the opener.
0-2 – Taylor opens with a 177, and although he misses the bull for a 124 finish, he has enough cushion to return and hit double eight.
0-3 – Taylor misses the bull for a 161 finish, but again lands double eight as he moves three legs clear.
1-3 – Whitlock finishes 96 on double eight to get off the mark.
1-4 – Taylor scores 180 and 140 before finishing 81 on tops for a 12-darter.
1-5 – Whitlock lands a maximum in reply but misses double top and ten, allowing Taylor in to finish 89 on the bull to move halfway to victory.
1-6 – Taylor finishes 109 on tops to move five legs clear.
2-6 – Whitlock hits a 174 to leave 24, and when Taylor misses tops for a 101 finish the Australian lands double 12 to hit back.
2-7 – Whitlock lands a 180 but Taylor finishes double eight to win his seventh leg.
3-7 – Taylor misses a dart at tops, and Whitlock steps in to hit double ten and win his second leg in three.
4-7 – Whitlock hits a 171, and punishes Taylor for a miss at tops by hitting the same bed to break for the first time in the game.
5-7 – Whitlock posts his third 180 of the game, and finishes 80 in two darts on double ten to win a third straight leg and pull back to within touching distance.
6-7 – Tayor misses a dart at double ten and two at double five, and Whitlock takes out 36 by hitting single four and double 16 to pull back to within a leg.
7-7 – Whitlock posts his fourth 180 of the game and takes out 180 to incredibly level the contest – having won five successive legs.
7-8 – Whitlock misses double 16 for a 149 checkout, and Taylor lands tops to regain the lead.
7-9 – Taylor opens with a 171 and finishes 96 on double eight to move a leg away from the title.
7-10 – Taylor hits a 180 and completes his triumph with a two-dart 73 finish for a 14-dart leg.

PDC UNICORN WORLD YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
JAMES HUBBARD 6-3 MICHAEL VAN GERWEN

Hubbard, who only turned professional last November, produced an impressive display to condemn van Gerwen to defeat in the final for a second successive year, following his previous loss to Arron Monk in January 2011.

The 19-year-old took command from the start after opening the game with an 11-darter and taking a 3-0 lead, to mean that van Gerwen’s fightback eventually came in vain.

“It feels amazing,” he said. “When you start playing darts, this is what you dream of, and to play in front of 10,000 people is a dream come true for me, and to come out as World Champion is amazing.

“I was nervous before the game but Simon Whitlock was brilliant and gave me lots of advice, and the start I made on stage was terrific and settled me down.

“I didn’t think I’d win it to be honest because Michael’s so experienced and such a brilliant player. You always believe in yourself, but when I hit that double top it was the most amazing feeling of my life.”

Despite stepping on stage in front of 10,000 fans at London’s O2 Arena, Hubbard showed no nerves with a superb opening, hitting scores of 140, 180 and 145 in the opening leg as he finished double nine for an 11-darter.

He then scored 171 to leave 32 in the next as he broke throw on double eight, after van Gerwen missed tops, and a nerveless 81 finish of treble 15 and double 18 for a 14-darter moved him 3-0 up.

Van Gerwen replied in 14 darts to get off the mark, finishing 76 on double eight, before Hubbard landed two 140s and a 120 before hitting double ten to lead 4-1.

The Norfolk prospect faltered for the first time with five misses at doubles in the sixth leg, as van Gerwen posted double 16 and then produced a quality 12-darter – featuring a 180 and a 102 finish of single 20, bullseye and double 16 – to reduce the gap to 4-3.

However, the Dutchman could only watch on in the next after leaving 74, as Hubbard finished 51 on tops to move to the brink of victory, and when van Gerwen missed double 15 to take out 88 he stepped in to land tops for the title and a £10,000 first prize.

Leg-By-Leg
0-1 – Hubbard makes a brilliant start, hitting 140, 180, 145 and finishing double nine for an 11-darter.
0-2 – Hubbard lands a 171 to leave 32, and when van Gerwen misses tops he returns to land double eight and break throw.
0-3 – Hubbard finishes 81 with treble 15 and double 18 to move three legs clear.
1-3 – van Gerwen finishes 76 in two darts to win his first leg of the game.
1-4 – Hubbard scores 140, 140 and 120 before missing tops for a 101 finish, but he has enough cushion to return and land double ten with his third dart.
2-4 – Hubbard misses double 19, double eight and three darts at double four before van Gerwen lands double 16.
3-4 – van Gerwen hits a 180 to leave 102, and takes out the combination with single 20, bull and double 16.
3-5 – Hubbard hits tops to move one leg away from the title.
3-6 – van Gerwen misses double 15 for an 88 finish, and Hubbard hits tops for the victory.

The night also featured a special performance of the charity single ‘Got My Ticket For The Darts’, as Chas Hodges & The Premier League Boys were joined on stage by Taylor, Wade, Hamilton, Gary Anderson, Raymond van Barneveld, Adrian Lewis, Kevin Painter and PDC Chairman.

The song has been released to raise money for Haven House Children’s Hospice, and is available for 99p from iTunes.

Taylor was a comfortable league leader after losing only one of his 14 league games, with Whitlock finishing second, while both Hamilton and Wade won their places in the semi-finals on a dramatic final league night last week.

Whitlock’s win over Adrian Lewis denied the World Champion a top-four finish, while Hamilton defeated Kevin Painter to finish third and Wade edged out Raymond van Barneveld on leg difference after they drew in their decisive contest.

Thursday’s Play-Offs will now see Taylor face Wade in the semi-finals in a repeat of the Premier League finals in 2008 and 2010 – with the latter seeing history created when Taylor hit two nine-dart finishes in a 10-8 triumph.

Whitlock plays Hamilton in the other semi-final, with the two winners then returning to the stage in front of around 10,000 fans to battle for the prestigious trophy.

“I can’t wait,” said Taylor, the 2/5 favourite to take the title with William Hill. “It’s going to be a massive night and I’m really up for it because this is the culmination of four months of work.

“The Premier League’s up there now for me in being as big as the World Championship and I really am going to try my best on Thursday.

“It’s going to be tough against James in the semi-finals but I’m hugely determined to get that trophy back. It means everything to me – I want to get Gary Anderson’s name off the trophy and get mine back on it!”

Wade won the 2009 Premier League title and is the second most successful player in the PDC’s history behind Taylor, having won seven major titles since 2007.

“I’ve got to win two games now but it’s not as simple as that because I’m playing Phil in the semis,” said Wade, the world number three. “Hopefully I’ll win the first one and then we’ll see what happens.

“I think it’s quite clear that Phil does something special against me and prepares perhaps even a little bit differently. I take that as a sign that he wants to kick my backside every time.

“If I can beat him in the semi-finals then hopefully I’ll have a good game in the final – but I’ve got to try and beat Phil first. I’m being positive about it and not frightened by playing him.”

The other semi-final sees Australian star Whitlock returning to the Play-Offs, having lost 8-6 in the last four to Wade two years ago only to miss out in 2011.

Having impressed in finishing second in the league table after 14 weeks, he said: “I set myself goals and I’ve achieved the first one, but the job’s not done yet – I want to make the final and win it.

“I was a bit unlucky when I lost in the semis two years ago; James pulled out one big finish which hurt me, and I still haven’t forgotten that. Hopefully I can make up for that now.”

World Championship finalist Hamilton has enjoyed a brilliant second half to his debut Premier League season – having found himself bottom of the table after six games before losing just once in his final eight to defy the pundits in reaching the Play-Offs.

“Nobody expected me to get here, and whatever happens now is a bonus to me,” he said. “I’ll keep playing darts and keep fighting like The Hammer does.

“I’ve earned the right to be in the top four and the semi-final will be a battle again. I’ve got nothing to lose and I’ve got a lot to gain. On my day I can beat anybody, I know I can.

“I’ve played some great darts and I’ll fight for a game as well – if someone wants a battle, give me the biggest battle ever. Don’t write me off!”

Hamilton enjoyed his first visit to The O2 on Wednesday, and admitted: “It’s an incredible venue and I can’t wait to get on stage now.

“It will be an amazing atmosphere on Thursday night and I think it will bring the best out of me.”

The McCoy’s Premier League Darts semi-finals will be played over the best of 15 legs, with the final being the best of 19 legs.

William Hill, the official betting partner of the McCoy’s Premier League Darts, make Taylor their odds-on 2/5 favourite to claim his sixth Premier League title on Thursday.

Whitlock is the 9/2 second favourite, with Wade priced at 7/1 to claim his second Premier League Darts title and newcomer Hamilton the 10/1 outsider after qualifying for the Play-Offs in his debut season.

Taylor is 1/5 to win his semi-final against Wade, who is rated as 7/2 to win through to the decider.

Whitlock is the 4/9 favourite to win the other semi-final against Hamilton, who is rated as 7/4 despite the Stoke ace taking a win and a draw from the pair’s two league contests this season.

Forgoing the easy options of Chizzy and Kim Huybrechts et al. We chose instead to look for those who could be classed as under the radar, or perhaps over the hill!

So who amongst our nominees is on course to verify our predictions and who is over achieving? Do we have any strugglers, or have we made any glaring errors?
Ian ‘Diamond’ White

Ian is rocketing up the charts and has recently entered the top 50 in the PDC Order of Merit. He has qualified in the top 32 group for the later stages of The UK Open and is currently in a qualifying position for every major event other than the Grand Slam. Largely thanks to a Pro Tour semi-final in weekend one, and a final placing a few weeks ago, both in which Ian acquitted himself well. I am sure it is will not be long before a maiden victory comes along. As mention previously, this may well be the result of finally being able to play with far less everyday pressure. Ian’s strong finish last year earned him respite from financial and other demands. Thus with money banked early this year the pressure is not as suffocating. This allows Ian to play the remorseless rythmic darts which at times are almost unstoppable. In addition Ian also hit the 1st 9 darter of the 2012 season against practice partner ‘Mile High’ in Benidorm on day 1 round 1!

“No need to alter our prediction here Diamond is well ahead of schedule to achieve all he wants this year”.

Michael Mansell

After settling in well towards the end of 2011 Mickey has had a good start to 2012, a creditable performance at The World Cup was followed by good runs in the Pro Tour events. Mickey is steadily picking up and has again qualified for The UK Open, last year James Wade proved too strong but not before Mickey had shown the superb natural throw and relaxed manner that may prove to be his best asset.

“Again no need to alter our thoughts on Mickey, steady as she goes seems to be the path!”

Nigel Heydon

Nigel has had a slower start than predicted but he is part of a good set up with Scott Rand and Kim Huybrechts, recent new sponsorship deals and a few other changes see Nigel settling well again. He has qualified for the UK Open making it 3 years in a row as a PDC player. He has previously reached the last 16 so don’t be surprised if The Undertaker chooses this event to come to life.

“Despite a steady start we have faith in Nigel and are positive he will come through strongly as in previous years”.

Aarron Monk

Tremendous start for the world Youth Champ this season, wins on the youth tour and some good runs in the Pro Tour, again Aaron has qualified for the UK Open and it will be interesting to see if his new found maturity and experience as a player will translate into results and see him reach the latter stages in Bolton.

“It may be at least as good a 2012 for Aarron as we thought, more chances to come at both youth and major levels”.

Mark Hylton

Until the most recent events it looked like Mark was not quite on target in accordance with our predictions, however some good wins when not playing well and then a great final UK Open qualifier weekend mean that Mark is in almost the same place as last year, and we know how that resulted! With more swings in the orders of merit it is likely that Marks upturn in form has arrived at the perfect time.

“”As we predicted the questions out weigh the answers so far this season. How high will Mark climb and which events will prove his favorites this year?”

Dennis Smith

Another name that provoked some dissent when included on the list. However our belief that, for some, experience and attitude would prove highly valuable. Smiffy again proved his has both in reaching a Pro Tour Final for a second time in 18 months. Again highly placed for the UK Open, Dennis will appear in the last 64 stage as a serious opponent for anyone. He is also well placed to feature in other major events, which will see him stabilise and improve his ranking and regain the position he feels he deserves.

“Dennis is slightly ahead of our prediction target and will do at least as well as expected”.

Q School Newcomer

In the original article we selected two names that, following years of watching opens etc, we were sure would make an impact in the PDC. In addition we picked a wild card who we now has real ability and hoped would get a good start. Amazingly we have been proved startlingly correct and very quickly. Johnny Haines hit the ground running early and caught a few names napping, with runs to the quarter finals and last 16 very early in the year. Andrew Gilding has, as usual, taken time to assess his situation and now begun to settle. His fantastic weekend in Birmingham reaching the quarter final and last 16 and removing a host of start names ( unfortunately including our own Mile High!) should not have come as a surprise to anyone. Pete Hughes is yet to catch fire and has been beset by both illness and misfortune. However Pete is very much a work in progress and I am sure he will live to fight another day.

Summary

So there you have it – 4 established Pro’s, 1 youth and 3 newcomers. All have done well in parts and many have really kicked on or returned to winning ways. Although prediction is always a risky business, we did not select the obvious candidets and have witnessed some great progress and thoroughly enjoyed checking in on the guys. We also tried to select great people who any of you would find approachable and entertaining should you bump into them on the circuit. We look forward to their watching their development as the season hots up, and we arrive at the business end.

Robert Holmes, the BDO’s PR Consultant has been brought onto the BDO Board as an Executive Director so that his experience and professionalism can continue to be utilised to the greatest possible effect for the BDO.

“These are times of change for the BDO”, adds Barry Gilbey. “The Board has been faced with a lot of challenging re-organisation and is now extremely optimistic about the future growth of the BDO and the roles which they are committed to as we move ever forward”.

BDO BOARD of Directors:

BARRY GILBEY, Chairman with responsibility for development.
WAYNE WILLIAMS, Tournament Director
VIC SEXTON, Rules & Disciplinary Director
ROBERT HOLMES, Communications/Liaison Director

The BDO has a new Head Office and contact details are as follows:
BRITISH DARTS ORGANISATION, Unit 4, Glan-y-Llyn Industrial Estate, Taffs Well, Cardiff, CF15 7JD. Telephone: 02920-811815

Premature resignation? Not really, it was argued that Wolfies position on the board was a conflict of interest to begin with. As we remarked at the time – few sports have their number one player so involved in the mechanics of the game.

Will these latest changes actually strengthen the board? I suspect not…to truely move forward and make the changes to secure a healthy long term future, the BDO needs an injection of new blood and fresh ideas.

It has to be said that ‘Got My Ticket For The Darts’ is an appalling slice of musical cheddar, and the video, with all the best will in the world is fairly uncomfortable viewing. The Premier League class of 2012 act out various scenarios to the lyrical content, and perform the role of backing shouters!

HOWEVER that is exactly what the charity single is all about, its not meant to be serious and you have to applaud the players for being good sports. Songwriting responsibility falls to Chas Hodges, he of Chas & Dave who boasts the enviable back catalogue of Rabbit, Snooker Loopy & various forgettable FA Cup singles for Tottenham Hotspur.

DOWNLOAD it now!

Assuming this kind of Rockney, Boogie Woogie piano nonsense is not your thing and your listening gear now feels somewhat defiled, we can recommend an antidote in the form of our favourite albums of 2012 so far.

Below is the information from the official PDC website:

Darts fans can now purchase the ‘Got My Ticket To The Darts’ charity single, following its release on iTunes.

The catchy song – recorded by ‘Chas Hodges & The Premier League Boys’ – costs just 99p from iTunes and has been released to raise money for Haven House Children’s Hospice.

The song’s release coincides with the McCoy’s Premier League Darts Play-Offs on Thursday May 17, when Chas will lead a special performance of the song at The O2 in London, featuring guest stars live on stage!

The video for ‘Got My Ticket To The Darts’ stars the eight McCoy’s Premier League Darts players, with Phil Taylor, Adrian Lewis, James Wade, Gary Anderson, Raymond van Barneveld, Simon Whitlock, Andy Hamilton and Kevin Painter joining Chas and his band.

Taylor, Wade, Whitlock and Hamilton will be competing in Thursday’s Play-Offs as they target the £150,000 title – with Taylor admitting: “It’s a massive week for me, both in darts and also with the release of ‘Got My Ticket To The Darts’.

“We had great fun filming the video and the money raised is going to a fantastic cause. It would be incredible to think that we can get the song into the Top 40!

“We’ve had over 90,000 fans come to the Premier League in the last few months who’ve heard it played in the arenas, and I hope they now go and buy the song to help out Haven Hospice.”

Those results meant that Whitlock – who came from 4-1 down to take victory – finishes second in the table and now takes on Hamilton in the semi-finals.

“I was already in the semi-finals but I wanted to win tonight to make sure that I avoided Phil Taylor, so I’m over the moon to have done that,” said Whitlock.

“The McCoy’s Premier League this year has been the hardest ever, so I’m delighted to have finished second but I’ve got two steps left now; to reach the final and then go on and win it.”

Hamilton had found himself bottom of the table after six weeks, but has lost just once in eight games since since – when he missed a chance to draw with Taylor – in claiming a place at The O2.

“I’m absolutely delighted to have qualified and I feel privileged to be in the top four out of the eight best players in the world,” said Hamilton.

“It’s been an amazing second half to the season, I’m grinding results out and taking my chances. Whatever happens now is a bonus for me but I’ll keep fighting next week against Simon.”

Hamilton’s third place was secured when Wade hit a 13-darter in the deciding leg of his clash with van Barneveld in the night’s other decisive game.

The Dutchman had to win to jump above Wade and into the semis, and led 4-2 before Wade took four successive legs to move in front.

Van Barneveld hit back with a 161 finish in taking a 7-6 lead, but a 13-darter from Wade in the decider saw him dramatically edge into the top four, and he now plays league leader Phil Taylor in the other semi-final next Thursday.

“It was a hard game and Raymond played well, so there’s a massive sense of satisfaction to be in the Play-Offs again,” said Wade.

“I’m looking forward to playing Phil in the semi-finals. He seems to do something special against me every time we play so I know the size of the task, but I’m being positive about it.”

Taylor ended the league season eight points clear at the top of the table after drawing with reigning champion Gary Anderson in the night’s other game, with the Scot finishing with a point but ending the defence of his title at the foot of the table.

“I wanted to get a win and hit a massive average but it wasn’t to be – it was a bit like a sparring session ahead of the Play-Offs,” admitted Taylor. “The other guys were all on edge tonight and there was a lot of pressure, but we can all focus on the semis now.

“I know I’m in for a tough game and I’ll be getting ready for James. When I beat him in the final, I won 10-8 and hit two nine-darters because he’s such a good player that I know what he’ll do.”

The Play-Offs at The O2 in London next Thursday will be accompanied by the final of the PDC Unicorn World Youth Championship between Dutchman Michael van Gerwen and Norfolk’s James Hubbard, as they battle for the title previously held by Arron Monk.

SIMON WHITLOCK 8-6 ADRIAN LEWIS
SIMON WHITLOCK knocked Adrian Lewis out of the McCoy’s Premier League Darts with a thrilling comeback from 5-2 down to end the World Champion’s hopes of claiming a Play-Off place.

Lewis had to take victory in the pair’s last league game if he was to keep alive his hopes of improving on last year’s run to the final – but saw his hopes crushed by the Australian.

Whitlock is now assured of finishing in second place after winning half of his 14 league games, as he prepares to challenge for the £150,000 title at The O2 in London next week.

“I was already in the semi-finals but I wanted to win tonight to make sure that I avoided Phil Taylor in the semi-finals, so I’m over the moon to have done that,” said Whitlock.

“Adrian was fantastic early on but I hung in there and when I was 5-2 down it took a lot of bottle to come back from there. I dug deep and the darts went in for me.

“The McCoy’s Premier League this year has been the hardest ever, so I’m delighted to have finished second but I’ve got two steps left now; to reach the final and then go on and win it.”

The pair traded 180s in sharing the opening two legs, with Lewis hitting tops for a 13-darter before Whitlock finished 92 on the same double to level before the World Champion took command.

Lewis punished a missed double 16 from Whitlock to win the third on tops, before finishing 88 on the bull and 38 on double eight to move 4-1 up.

Whitlock fired in a 130 checkout, hitting the bull himself, to win the sixth but Lewis posted a 12-darter to move three legs clear again at 5-2.

Lewis also opened the eighth leg with five successive treble 20s, hitting a 180 and 123, only to see Whitlock reply with a maximum before taking out 77 for a 14-darter.

The Australian then punished a miss at tops from Lewis by landing double eight before levelling by following a 180 in the next with a nervy double one checkout.

Lewis hit a 180 and tops to regain the lead at 6-5, with Whitlock landing a maximum and double eight to square the contest.

Lewis left himself 69 in the 13th leg as he sought to seal at least a draw, but was dramatically denied a chance as Whitlock powered in a 140 checkout to move 7-6 up and lead for the first time, before sealing victory on double 16 to end the Stoke star’s Play-Off ambitions.

Leg-By-Leg
1-0 – Lewis hits a 180 and adds a 122 to leave 40 after 12 darts in a strong opening, winning the leg in 13 darts.
1-1 – Whitlock replies with a maximum of his own to set up a 92 finish, which he finishes on tops.
2-1 – Whitlock misses double 16 for a 112 finish, and Lewis lands tops to take the third leg.
3-1 – Whitlock opens with a 180 but Lewis breaks by finishing 88 on the bullseye.
4-1 – Whitlock leaves himself 20 but Lewis is first to a double and takes out 38 on double eight with a pressure third dart.
4-2 – Whitlock wins a key sixth, with Lewis unable to take out 164 to allow the Australian in to take out 130 on the bull.
5-2 – Lewis regains his cushion with a 12-darter, completed with an 81 finish.
5-3 – Lewis kicks off with five treble 20s in a 180 and 123, but Whitlock replies with a maximum and finishes 77 in two for a 14-darter.
5-4 – Both players miss chances at doubles as the tension rises before Whitlock posts double eight to break.
5-5 – Whitlock hits a 180 and has enough cushion to miss five darts at a double before double one sees him level.
6-5 – Lewis hits a 180 and finishes tops to regain the lead.
6-6 – Whitlock posts a fifth 180, and double eight sees him level.
6-7 – The Australian deals a killer blow to Lewis’ hopes, powering home a 140 checkout with Lewis waiting on 69.
6-8 – Lewis is unable to finish 97, setting up 40 but being denied a dart for a draw as Whitlock finishes double 16 to knock out the World Champion.

ANDY HAMILTON 8-1 KEVIN PAINTER
ANDY HAMILTON dramatically booked a McCoy’s Premier League Darts semi-final place, defeating Play-Off rival Kevin Painter 8-1 in their decisive contest.

The pair went into the final league game of their debut Premier League Darts seasons knowing that victory would push them into next week’s Play-Offs – and it was the World Championship finalist who triumphed with a fine display.

Hamilton hit four 180s and finished 42 percent of his chances at a double to pounce, completing a remarkable fightback from finding himself bottom of the table halfway through the season.

Painter never recovered from missing doubles in the opening two legs as Hamilton – who kicked off the match with a 180 – was allowed back to land double ten to win the first leg before he took out 78 in two darts for the second.

Hamilton posted another 180 and tops to take the third before repeating his 78 checkout to break in the fourth to lead 4-0.

A fine 111 finish from Painter got him off the mark in the fifth, but two misses at double eight in the next allowed Hamilton back to post double ten and regain his cushion at 5-1.

Painter hit a 180 in the seventh but could only watch as Hamilton posted double 16, and a missed bull for a 121 checkout in the next allowed the Stoke ace to follow an earlier maximum by posting tops.

Hamilton gave Painter a glimmer of a fightback in the next, missing tops for a 118 finish for the match, but the Daventry thrower was unable to land the bull again, and his rival landed double ten to seal his semi-final place.

“I’m absolutely delighted to have qualified and I feel privileged to be in the top four out of the eight best players in the world,” said Hamilton.

“Kevin wanted to win this as much as I did, and nobody probably thought that either of us could have reached the semi-finals at the start of the season, so it’s great that I have done it – and I feel like I’ve done it for both of us.

“Getting a good start was important again, and I stayed strong and my finishing was pretty good – it’s put me into the last four and that’s all I’m worried about.

“It’s been an amazing second half to the season, I’m grinding results out and taking my chances. Whatever happens now is a bonus for me but I’ll keep fighting next week against Simon.”

Leg-By-Leg
1-0 – Hamilton kicks off the match with a 140 but misses with his first chance at a double but when Painter misses two darts to break the Stoke ace returns to finish double ten to lead.
2-0 – Painter misses a dart at tops, and Hamilton finishes 78 in two darts to break.
3-0 – Hamilton lands a second 180 and posts tops with a pressure third dart to move three legs clear.
4-0 – Painter is unable to finish 116 and Hamilton powers in a second two-dart 78 checkout to break again.
4-1 – Painter hits back with a break of throw, taking out 111 on tops to get off the mark.
5-1 – Hamilton misses darts at double top and ten, but Painter misses two darts of his own, both at double eight, to allow the World Championship finalist in on double ten to regain a four-leg cushion.
6-1 – Painter hits a 180 but Hamilton finishes double 16 to pull away.
7-1 – Hamilton ensures at least a draw, following up a 180 by finishing tops after Painter missed the bull for a 121 finish.
8-1 – Hamilton misses tops for a 118 finish, but Painter cannot land the bull for an 81 checkout and Hamilton returns to finish double ten for a 14-darter to win – securing his semi-final place!

RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD 7-7 JAMES WADE
JAMES WADE claimed the final place in the McCoy’s Premier League Darts Play-Offs as he snatched a draw with Raymond van Barneveld at Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena – denying the Dutchman a semi-final spot.

Van Barneveld had to win the contest to finish in the top four ahead of the 2009 champion, and led 4-2 at one stage before Wade took a 6-4 lead.

The Dutchman moved 7-6 up to move to the brink of a famous victory, but Wade produced a superb deciding leg, hitting a 180 in a 13-darter as he secured a fourth-placed finish to set up a semi-final with Phil Taylor at The O2 in London.

Van Barneveld hit a 180 and double 16 to win the opening leg before Wade levelled with a 95 checkout – but misses in the next two legs cost the left-hander as his opponent hit double ten and double 16 to move 3-1 up.

Tops in the fifth saw Wade hit back, but he missed two darts to level in the next as van Barneveld posted a 97 checkout in two darts for a 4-2 lead.

Wade hit a 180 in a 14-darter to break in leg seven, before hitting double eight to level, double 12 to lead and taking out 80 on double ten to move 6-4 up with a fourth successive leg and move to the brink of a semi-final spot.

He would be made to wait, as van Barneveld replied strongly, hitting a 180 and a 161 checkout to take the 11th leg, an 80 finish on the bull to evel and double 16 to move 7-6 up after Wade missed three darts to take a point.

Van Barneveld knew that he must win the decider to take victory and a semi-final place, but Wade – with the advantage of throw – powered in a 180 and a 140 to leave 121 after nine darts, and set up the double top which he landed to secure a Play-Off berth.

“It was a hard game and Raymond played well, so there’s a massive sense of satisfaction to be in the Play-Offs again,” said Wade.

“I’ve scraped through with the right results and the wrong times for other people, and Simon Whitlock helped me out tonight by beating Adrian.

“I know what I’ve got to do next week in the Play-Offs – to win two games! I’ve done it before and I’m just glad to be there, because a couple of weeks ago it was looking bad for me and seven weeks ago it was looking even worse!

“I’m looking forward to playing Phil in the semi-finals. He seems to do something special against me every time we play so I know the size of the task, but I’m being positive about it.”

Leg-By-Leg
1-0 – van Barneveld lands a 180 and finishes double 16 with his third dart to take the lead.
1-1 – Wade finishes 95 on tops to level.
2-1 – The Dutchman misses two darts at tops and one at double ten, but Wade is unable to land the bull for a 119 checkout, and van Barneveld returns to hit double ten to edge back ahead.
3-1 – van Barneveld hits a 180 to leave 71, and when Wade misses five darts to win the leg he accepts his reprieve for two previous misses at double 16 by returning to hit the bed.
3-2 – Wade posts tops to break throw and reduce the arrears.
4-2 – Wade misses two darts to level – at double 12 and six for a 72 finish – and van Barneveld produces a fine two-dart 97 checkout to move 4-2 up at the interval.
4-3 – Wade lands a 180 to leave 30, and finishes double 15 for a 14-darter to break throw.
4-4 – Double eight sees Wade level the contest.
4-5 – A key leg goes Wade’s way, with van Barneveld missing tops for a 72 finish to allow the left-hander in on double 12.
4-6 – Wade finishes 80 in two darts on double ten to move two legs clear – leaving van Barneveld needing to win all four remaining legs to reach the semi-finals.
5-6 – van Barneveld keeps his Play-Off hopes alive, hitting a 180 and taking out a sensational 161 checkout.
6-6 – Wade is unable to finish 104, and van Barneveld steps up needing 80 – hitting single five, outer bull and the bullseye to level!
7-6 – Wade opens with a 180 but misses the bull for a 164 finish – only for van Barneveld to miss the middle double for a 124 checkout. Wade cannot take out two darts at double ten, and van Barneveld amazingly hits double 16 to send the decisive contest into a deciding leg!
7-7 – Wade opens 60, 180, with van Barneveld posting two tons. The 2009 champion then hits a 140 to leave 121, and opts to leave 40 instead of throwing for the bullseye. Van Barneveld hits a 138 to leave a finish, and Wade hits tops for a 13-darter to take a draw and qualify ahead of van Barneveld for the Play-Offs.

GARY ANDERSON 7-7 PHIL TAYLOR
REIGNING McCoy’s Premier League Darts champion Gary Anderson ended the defence of his title on a high with a draw against Phil Taylor at Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena.

Anderson has struggled for form and confidence this season as well as suffering the loss of his father in March, but saw his season finish with a flourish as he hit a 161 checkout amongst the draw with Taylor.

The stalemate means that Taylor finishes the league season eight points clear at the top of the table, as he now progresses to The O2 in London next week to face James Wade in the semi-finals as he bids to take the trophy back from the grasp of Anderson.

“I think it was a great game for the fans to watch, and I’m glad to see Gary playing well again,” said Taylor. “Gary relaxed and played like he can play, and after being through a lot this year it’s nice for him.

“Hopefully next week I can take the trophy and rub his name off it now! I know it’s going to be tough in the semis against James and I’d love to be in the final after that.”

After the pair shared the first two legs, Anderson finished double ten to win the third before posting a superb 161 checkout to break throw and lead 3-1.

Taylor finished double 16 to break back in leg five, and although Anderson posted a 180 in the next he was unable to finish 139, and the world number one posted tops to square the game.

Anderson defied a 180 from Taylor by finishing 67 on tops in the seven, and then took full advantage of four misses to hit double ten and break again for a 5-3 cushion.

Finishes of double four and double two from Taylor saw him level, but he missed a chance to lead for the first time when he was unable to land a tricky bullseye in leg 11, with Anderson finishing 70 on tops for a 6-5 cushion.

Anderson missed the bull and two darts at tops to break in the next as Taylor posted double five to square the game again, before a superb 11-darter from the Scot – featuring scores of 140, 180, 99 and an 82 finish of treble 14, double top – saw him secure at least a draw at 7-6 up.

However, he would be denied the chance to take a victory which would have moved him off the foot of the table when Taylor finished 68 on double 16 to share the points with a draw.

Anderson admitted: “It was a nice way to finish and we both enjoyed that game. I could have pinched a win at the end but it’s nice to end the season playing half-decent.

“It’s good to be back in some form after what’s happened. I’ve been struggling but I’m trying to get on with things and my game’s getting better slowly.

“I’m proud that I’ve been the Premier League champion and hopefully I’ll be back next year. I’ve got a couple of weeks off now and I’ll prepare for the UK Open, and it would be great to have a good run there.”

Leg-By-Leg
1-0 – Anderson starts the stronger and has enough cushion to miss two darts at a double before posting double one for the leg.
1-1 – Taylor levels the match by posting double top at the second time of asking.
2-1 – Anderson misses tops for a 96 finish, but when Taylor misses the bull for a 121 checkout the Scot returns to post double ten.
3-1 – Anderson finishes a superb 161 checkout to break throw.
3-2 – Taylor breaks back immediately by finishing double 16.
3-3 – Taylor levels the contest going into the break.
4-3 – Taylor hits a maximum, but Anderson takes out 67 on tops to edge back ahead.
5-3 – Anderson kicks off the leg with a 180, but misses a dart at tops to break throw – only for Taylor to miss double top, ten and five to let him back in to win the leg on double ten.
5-4 – Taylor breaks back immediately, initially missing double eight for a 121 finish before being allowed back in to post double four.
5-5 – Taylor hits a 180 and lands double two with his third dart to square the game.
6-5 – Taylor misses the bull for a 90 finish, and Anderson takes out 70 on tops to edge back ahead.
6-6 – Anderson misses the bull for a 124 finish and two further darts at tops, allowing Taylor back to win the leg on double five.
7-6 – Anderson opens with 140 and 180, and Taylor adds a maximum of his own, only for Anderson to finish 82 with treble 14 and tops for an 11-darter.
7-7 – Taylor is first to a finish, and takes out 68 on double 16 to grab a draw – condemning Anderson to finishing bottom of the table.
