It’s a talented player who can give Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor a run for his money, but that’s exactly what we witnessed at this year’s Ladbrokes World Darts Championship on New Year’s Day.

Not one to be defeated, however, Taylor stormed from two sets down to win the £200,000 title; his nail-biting 7-4 defeat of 23-year-old Dutch player Michael van Gerwen is Taylor’s 16th World Championship win.

Dutch player van Gerwen, nicknamed Mighty Mike, gave a brilliant performance on the night, leading 2-0 and 4-2 before missing two chances to move 5-2 up. Taylor went on to win five successive sets, scooping the title, leaving van Gerwen to take £100,000 as runner up.

The young player still has a lot to be proud of; he knocked out defending champion Adrian Lewis and defeated James Wade on his way to the final, and leaves the championship in a career-high position of fourth in the PDC Order of Merit. He remarked:

“I don’t think I played as well tonight as I did in my earlier games…I feel great but it didn’t happen and it’s disappointing after having a good run that I didn’t finish the job off.”

It seems that the excitement of winning still hasn’t worn off for 52-year-old Phil Taylor, however, who said: “I’m the proudest man in the world at the moment and to have my family watching makes this a very special night…I’m World Champion again and I’m so happy now.”

It wasn’t an easy ride to the title, and he was under pressure from van Gerwen the whole way. Taylor paid credit to his worthy opponent, saying “he is truly a phenomenal player and I give Michael every credit – there were times when he hit some fantastic finishes and it crippled me a little bit.”

The event, held at Alexandra Palace, was sponsored by online betting and gaming giants Ladbrokes. were founded in 1886, and since then they’ve gone on to become one of the world’s leading betting and gaming enterprises – with 2,700 betting shops perfect for events like the World Darts Championship.

Over the years they have also expanded into online sports betting and online casinos, offering a variety of games such as blackjack, roulette and even bingo.

Given his past performance, we reckon that your money would be pretty safe with Phil Taylor, but as Michael van Gerwen progresses through his career he’s looking more and more like a safe bet.
