Following Martin Fitzmaurice’s recent resignation, the British Darts Organisation have officially named ‘Little’ Richard Ashdown as his replacement. Despite his nickname Ashdown is one of the biggest personalities in darts, particularly on the exhibition circuit.

Also renowned as one of darts top statisticians, Richard has already completed 12 years as a member of the BBC’s production team at the Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships.

The hugely experienced and popular MC and Referee has also officiated at over 40 BDO events in England, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and USA.

“I am proud and honoured to be hosting BDO tournaments – especially the majors like the Winmau World Masters, and the biggest one of them all, Lakeside. It is the realisation of my lifelong dreams as an MC.”

Little Richard has also hosted every WDF World Cup and Europe Cup since 2008 and has been MC and Referee for the England Darts Organisation (EDO) since its inauguration in 2007.

Fitzmaurice left the organisation after footage of his ‘racist’ jokes routine at the BDO British Internationals between Scotland and England in Fife was streamed live over the internet, prompting several tabloids to print stories of his unacceptable behaviour.

At a meeting on April 19th, 2013, the BDO’s Board of Directors considered the racially offensive remarks made by the MC, and his subsequent resignation letter, dated April 9th, 2013.

The Board unanimously agreed to accept Martin’s resignation and determined that, with immediate effect, and confirmed the 73 year old will no longer be contracted or utilised by the BDO at any of its events, as an MC, or represent the BDO in any capacity whatsoever.

Fiztmaurice himself told The Sun newspaper: “It was banter. I apologise if I offended anybody.”
