It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Phill Nixon ‘The Ferryhill Flyer’ at the end of last week following his fight against cancer.

Phill was a player with vast experience within the County Durham side who also played for England on the BDO circuit, his final competitive appearance last year saw Phill reach the World Masters quarter-finals – replicating his achievements of 2002.

The Ferryhill Flyer rose to prominence at the Lakeside in 2007, losing a thrilling final 7-6 to Martin Adams coming back from 6-0 down. Excerpts from that classic match are shown below, so why not watch again and remember him fondly.

Despite starting the 2007 tournament as a 150-1 outsider, Nixon beat Darryl Fitton, Martin Atkins, Paul Hanvidge and Niels de Ruiter before meeting “Wolfie” Adams in the final.

Phill also sampled PDC darts with appearances in the Grand Slam of darts in 2007 and 2008.

Nixon is survived by his wife, Suzanne, and eight children and was recently the guest of honour at a specially-arranged fundraising night at Ferryhill WMC, which was attended by a host of top darts players and officials.

The BDO have reported that Phill’s funeral will take place on Friday 23rd August 2013.
