Four amateur darts fanatics today saw their dreams of life on the main stage come true in Inverness when they qualified for the finals of the Speedy Services UK Open.

The quartet beat off stiff competition from fellow amateurs who had travelled the length and breadth of Scotland to take part in the qualifying rounds for the PDC event, which is known as the FA Cup of darts. Speedy is holding six qualifying events in total, with four winners from each event travelling to Bolton for the prestigious tournament on 7 June 2012. It will be shown over four days, live on Sky Sports.

As part of their journey to Bolton, the first obstacle was to score enough points with 15 darts to qualify for a one off leg of 701 against another high scoring amateur.Andy Murray, a gas fitter from Falkirk, Nicky Denoon, a self employed bricklayer from Helmsdale, Ryan Murray, a cleaner from Edinburgh and Craig McCaskill who will shortly begin a fabrication apprenticeship from Fearn in the Highlands all go through to Bolton after qualifying in today’s event.

Speedy, the UK’s leading provider of equipment rental and support services, has already staged events in Brighton and Dartford. Alongside today’s event in Inverness, the qualifying roadshow will next travel to Leeds (12th), Stoke (13th) and Cardiff (19th).

A Speedy employee-only special qualification event will then take place in Haydock on May 4.

Speedy has enlisted the help of 2008 world champion Mark Webster to offer expert advice for the qualifying rounds.

Speaking of the Inverness round, he said: “The standard in Inverness has been the best yet – we even had a couple of amateur players here who have played internationally, so there was lots of experience at the Speedy depot. I think the four qualifiers from today could do some serious damage when they get to Bolton.”

Speedy’s group marketing director Steve McIntyre said: “Last year’s qualifiers were really impressive in terms of quality, but we have already seen a higher standard in the three qualifiers so far. Today’s standard was exceptional and I’m sure that Andy, Ryan, Craig and Nicky could cause a few shock waves in Bolton.”
