Longevity Not Victory The Key in Championship League?
Posted on October 27th, 2011
The Championship League Darts tournament is an interesting one and is another variation on a theme that Barry Hearn and the PDC have come up with to keep the sport entertaining, which is no bad thing.
On the face of it the format is a clever one, for those who don’t know, the top eight players in the rankings play each other in a group format, the top four going into semi-finals and producing a winner who goes on to compete in the big money winner’s group. The bottom two from the group are eliminated and the remaining five go into the next group to be joined by the next three highest ranked players and this repeats for eight groups. Slightly complicated but an innovative way of producing a winner’s group of eight men, after eight qualifying groups.
However, there is an issue with how the tournament is run and that is the benefit that comes from not progressing at the first time of asking. The prize money is dished out per leg, £50 per leg in the initial group stages, and £100 per leg in the semi-final and final in each group. Therefore, if you don’t qualify but also avoid relegation in early groups, your earning capacity is multiplied greatly every additional group you compete in.

Posted on September 28th, 2011
GARY ANDERSON claimed victory in Group One of the 2011 Championship League Darts, defeating Wes Newton 6-1 in the final at Crondon Park after the Fleetwood ace picked up his first-ever win over Phil Taylor.
Anderson will now return for October’s big-money Winners Group in the internet-streamed event, which sees players compete in eight-man groups in a round-robin league phase before the top four contest each day’s Play-Offs.
Taylor – the 2008 Championship League Darts winner – had gone through the Group One league phase unbeaten but saw his hopes of early progression shattered by a brilliant Newton display in the semi-finals.
The Fleetwood ace, who has risen to seventh in the world this year and also reached June’s UK Open final, finished fourth in the table and led 2-0 against Taylor early on in their clash.

Wade Takes Championship League Darts Title
Posted on October 15th, 2010
JAMES WADE claimed his second major title inside a week with a stunning 6-5 win over Phil Taylor in the final of Championship League Darts.
Wade followed up Sunday’s Bodog.com World Grand Prix victory in Dublin by becoming the third Championship League Darts winner, taking home the £10,000 first prize plus £13,700 which he won during the internet-streamed event.
The left-hander had won Group Four to book his spot in the Winners Group, and took victory in five of his seven league games during the league phase to finish second behind unbeaten Taylor.
He then defeated Simon Whitlock 6-2 in the semis to book his place against Taylor in the final.
The world number two led on double ten but missed the bull for a 121 finish as Taylor landed a 93 finish and then broke on double top.
Taylor then landed a 180 in a 13-darter to lead 3-1 before Wade punished one miss from the world number one in each of the next two legs to level.
The left-hander then held his nerve to take out 61 in two darts to lead 4-3 before Taylor powered in an 11-darter to level and took out double 18 to move a leg away from the win at 5-4.
The duo hit 180s in the tenth, but it was Wade who forced a decider with an 84 finish on double 12.
Three ton-plus scores took Wade to a finish first in the final leg, and when Taylor was unable to check out 164 he returned to take out 72 in two darts on double 12 for the title.

Jones Wins Championship League Darts Group 8
Posted on October 15th, 2010
WAYNE JONES took victory in Group Eight of Championship League Darts, defeating debutant Mark Webster 6-2 to earn a place in Thursday’s Winners Group.
Jones was competing for a fourth successive day in the internet-streamed event and atoned for two previous semi-final defeats by going all the way in the last of the eight groups.
He ended the league phase with five wins from his seven matches before defeating Dennis Priestley 6-2 in the semis.
He then overcame Webster in the decider to earn his spot in the big-money Winners Group on Thursday at Crondon Park GC in Essex.
Webster took the final’s opening leg against the throw, but Jones replied with finishes of double eight and double 16 to lead before the left-hander from Wales took out 78 for the fourth.
After Jones finished 76 to regain the lead, missed doubles from Webster allowed him in on double eight for a 4-2 lead, with double four moving him clear and double 18 sealing the win.
Webster had won through to the final in his first-ever Championship League Darts appearance, and took home £2,500 for his day’s work.
The former Lakeside Champion hit a 180 with his opening three darts of the event, in a win over Jelle Klaasen, and went on to finish fourth in the league table.

Smith Wins Championship League Darts Group 7
Posted on October 13th, 2010
ANDY SMITH came from the brink of defeat to edge out Jelle Klaasen 6-5 and win Group Seven of Championship League Darts.
Smith did show some early nerves on the doubles, missing two darts for the opening leg as Klaasen held on double eight before the Dutchman landed a 180 but wasted five darts in leg two as Smith returned to level.
Double four for Klaasen saw him punish further misses from Smith in the third, only for Smith to level on double five and break on double ten for a 3-2 lead, which he extended thanks to double two after Klaasen missed double ten.
The Dutchman landed double 12 for the next two legs to level and then posted a 180 and double eight to move 5-4 up.
However, he missed double 11 for a 124 game shot in the tenth as Smith forced a decider, and – after opening with a 180 – saw two further match darts slip away as Smith hit double 16 to snatch the win.
Smith had also won his semi-final against Denis Ovens in a deciding leg, while four of his seven league matches also went the full 11-leg distance as he finished third in the league table.

Beatons Wins Championship League Darts Group 6
Posted on September 24th, 2010
STEVE BEATON took debut glory in Group Six of Championship League Darts, defeating Vincent van der Voort 6-3 to book his place in October’s Winners Group in the internet-streamed event.
The former World Champion entered the £200,000 tournament on Thursday for the first time, but adapted superbly to the behind-closed-doors event, winning five of seven league games.
Having finished second to van der Voort on Leg Difference after the eight-player group phase, he defeated Wayne Jones 6-3 in the semi-finals and repeated the scoreline in the final.
Beaton made an electric start to the final, hitting a 13-darter in the opening leg, a 161 finish in the second and an 11-darter to win the third.
Van der Voort took out 98 to get off the mark, but double eight restored Beaton’s cushion and a 78 finish moved him 5-1 up.
The Dutchman hit a 114 finish to stay in the game and also took the eighth on double six, but Beaton’s scoring pulled him clear in the next and double 15 gave Beaton the win.
He will now return to Crondon Park GC in Essex on October 14 to compete in the Winners Group, with Phil Taylor, Simon Whitlock, Alan Tabern, James Wade and Wes Newton already having book their place in the big-money final day.
