Newton Takes Championship League Darts Group 5

Posted on September 23rd, 2010

WES NEWTON booked his place in the Winners Group of Championship League Darts with a comprehensive 6-1 win over Co Stompe in the Group Five final on Wednesday.

Newton, the world number 20, entered the internet-streamed tournament in Group Five and produced a fine display in the play-offs to take victory.

Having won four of his seven league games in the round-robin phase, Newton found himself fourth in the table on leg difference, but routed league leader Adrian Lewis 6-1 in the semis.

Newton led 3-0 as Lewis, for the second successive day, paid for a slow start to the semis before the Fleetwood ace took the win.

He then came from a leg down against Stompe to reel off six in a row in the final, taking two breaks of throw in establishing a 4-1 lead before sealing victory with finishes of 116 and 118.

Newton now progresses to October’s big-money Winners Group alongside Phil Taylor, Simon Whitlock, Alan Tabern and James Wade, with a £10,000 first prize on offer alongside places in the Grand Slam of Darts for the finalists.

“I’m really pleased to have won through to the Winners Group at the first attempt,” said Newton. “I felt fresh coming into the day and, after losing my first game, I felt I played well throughout the league stage.

Wade Wins Championship League Darts Group 4

Posted on September 21st, 2010

JAMES WADE won Group Four of the 2010 Championship League Darts, dramatically edging out Dennis Priestley 6-5 in the final, as reigning champion Colin Osborne crashed out of the event.

The world number three, who had suffered disappointment in the previous three groups of this year’s internet-streamed event, finished fourth in the league table following the eight player round-robin phase.

He then overcame Adrian Lewis 6-4 in the semis, capitalising on a slow start from the Stoke ace to lead 4-3 before holding on for victory, and battled from behind to win the decider and book a place in October’s big-money Winners Group.

Veteran star Priestley showed the quality of a two-time World Champion by battling into the final, and levelled at two-all with a 100 finish before taking three of the next four to lead 5-3.

However, he would never get a dart for the match as Wade fired in an 11-darter in the ninth leg – his second of the game – and took out 93 to force a decider.

The left-hander opened the 11th with scores of 174 and 140 to pull away, before taking out double ten for victory, as Priestley waited on 109.

“I’m delighted to win through,” said Wade. “It was a really tough day but I was determined to win this group and I’ve managed to do that.

Tabern Surprise in Championship League Darts Group 3

Posted on September 13th, 2010

ALAN TABERN staged a sensational comeback from 5-3 down to defeat Gary Anderson in a deciding leg and win Group Three of Championship League Darts.

The left-hander entered the tournament on Thursday and enjoyed a superb day at Crondon Park GC in Essex in the internet-streamed tournament.

Six wins from seven games in the group stage saw him top the league table, before he defeated James Wade 6-2 in the semi-finals and Anderson in the decider, earning a spot in the Winners Group plus £3,200 prize money on the day.

His semi-final included finishes of 121 and 138 as he took a 4-0 lead against world number three Wade, who hit back to 4-2 but had no answer as the left-hander closed out the win with a brace of double top finishes.

Anderson took leads of 3-1 and 5-3 in the final, but after Tabern took out 100 in the ninth leg the Scot was made to pay for a missed dart at the bullseye for the match and two at double eight in the next.

Tabern landed double nine to force a deciding leg, and was the first to a double despite a 180 from Anderson, before hitting double ten to seal victory.

Tabern now progresses to compete in October’s big-money Winners Group, which offers £10,000 to the eventual champion plus a place in the Grand Slam of Darts for the finalists – an event the St Helens man is now targeting.
