An Evening with The Crafty Cockney

Posted on December 5th, 2011

Eric Bristow Exhibition – Hyde FC Social Club, December 2nd 2011

With Hyde setting the pace at the top of the Blue Square Bet North league there was a chance to take a breather from the rigours of non league football and an enthusiastic crowd turned up for a fun evening of arrers with a bona fide legend of the game.

Thirty years on from his heyday Eric Bristow still requires no introduction, even those who don’t follow the darts know all about The Crafty Cockney.

His powers on the oche may have waned with age and the effects of the dreaded darttitis but the cheeky arrogance is still in attendance and his rapport with the crowd began even before proceedings started.

If you have never been to one of these nights then I suggest you give it a try some time. You will get to meet, mingle and chat with a true darting legend and if you are brave enough to buy a raffle ticket or ten you have every chance of being drawn out to take to the stage (with your very own walk on music) and tackle the man himself at a leg of 501.

This is precisely what happened to sixteen lucky punters on Friday night and Eric saw off all but three of them. More of that shortly but let’s just say your intrepid reporter has something to dine out on for a long while.

Bullseye Theatre Tour Derby Review

Posted on November 4th, 2011

You Can’t Beat a Bit of Bully!

It’s one of the cornerstones of darts lingo and a healthy Derby crowd found out first hand that it is absolutely spot on. You really can’t beat a bit of Bully.

There’s no Jim Bowen or Tony Green, and (some might say thankfully) there’s no sign of Dave Spikey. What we do get is a trip down memory lane with all the favourites of the popular Sunday evening show, peddled along by comedian and compere extraordinaire Neil Wheatley.

The category round (Faces, Places, Sport, Showbiz, Affairs, History, Books, Words, Britain, Spelling), pounds for points, Bully’s prize board and star prize gamble are all in attendance; the three darts legends throw for the bronze bully; the losers get a Bullseye darts and a bendy bully in a tankard; there’s even a speedboat, albeit a 17 inch long model.

Respect the Fearless

Posted on June 27th, 2011

Here I sit, watching an old episode of Bullseye. I feel that my youth was wasted. I could have been playing darts and getting the practice in early. One year of darts just doesn’t seem to be enough at my age! The highlight of my week could have been watching the Lakeside and looking forward to a bit of Bully on prime time TV.

By no means do I claim to know all there is about darts. But I do crave the knowledge. My Dad was never particularly into the sport, and I can only wish my Granddad was around to tell me stories of Bobby George winning the News of the World Championship or John Lowe’s incredible T17, T18, D18 finish earning him over £100,000 in 1984, first hand.

I am a late generation of darts fan, however, certainly not the latest. There’s a whole new crop after me, with talent that threatens to surpass our heroes of the past and present – the likes of Arron Monk, Michael van Gerwen and the youngster Josh Richardson who I was stunned by just a couple of weeks ago.

A Year Full of Firsts

Posted on June 25th, 2011

So. The last year has been packed full of firsts. I’ve had firsts of meeting the likes of Phil Taylor, Colin Osborne, Adrian Lewis, Eric Bristow to name just a few.

My first darts set (ok, so that sounds like it should be available at all good toy stores), the first time i’ve been part of a darts team, my first 180, first ton-plus finish, the first time i’ve been mildly good at anything and I’m sharing anther first with you right now; my first darts blog post!

I guess the best place to start is at the beginning. It took a while to recover the memory, but I can just about recall the first time I threw a dart. It was at my local Community Centre when I was about 6 years old. I was with my Dad and brother, trying to butt in on what the boys were doing – as girls do. I can’t say I showed a natural aptitude for the sport at the time. However, a few years later I would find that I had a knack for throwing stuff.

Both poker and darts are highly popular pursuits. The games are available online, in fact, that there are organizations dedicated to making sure the rules of video poker and online darts are conformed. Similar to darts having the World Darts Federation, among others, and poker has the Tournament Directors Association. These rules are put into place in highly competitive tournaments, in which as many as hundreds or even thousands of people compete for cash prizes as well as prestige.
