Crowd Issues Provide Easy Excuse For Misfiring Players

Posted on December 15th, 2011

After what was a hugely entertaining Players Championship Finals, with big finishes a plenty and shock results generously sprinkled over the competition, there has been an issue that has left a bitter taste in the mouth of some of the bigger name players.

The two highest ranked, and widely recognised men in the tournament, Phil Taylor and James Wade both went out of the competition surprisingly early, and both have put their premature exits down to issues with the crowd and with their opponents over-celebrating.

These issues, especially that of crowd noise, could potentially be genuine reasons for poor performance, but in this case it just seems that the toys are being thrown out of the pram more than anything else. Read the rest of this entry »

William Hill Grand Slam of Darts Last 16

Posted on November 18th, 2011

With the group stages determined last night and half the field eliminated from this years Grand Slam of Darts, our attention turns to the last 16 (Round 2). Following 5 days of races to 6, the last 16 offers the players the chance to slug it out over a few more legs, with the first man to notch up 10 to his name securing a place in the quarter final and a guaranteed £15k payday.

On paper the game of the night looked to be James Wade v Gary Anderson, notwithstanding The Flying Scotsman’s recent comments of course. However, surprisingly, or not? It was the two games featuring BDO v PDC that offered the closest scoreline, drama and overall entertainment.

Dean Winstanley (9) v (10) Mark Walsh

The only thing predictable in this clash was the winners surname would begin with W. Having no previous head to head form to go on, and nothing significantly separating their tournament stats.

Walsh took first blood, however the Yorkshireman quickly took the next 3 legs giving himself a 2 leg buffer with a 92 finish on the bull and sitting on a 107 average. Walsh though, with 83% checkout success including finishes of 138, 98, 60 and 82 regained the advantage at 5-3. The following two legs were shared meaning that Special Brew entered the break 6-4 ahead, despite Winstanley maintaining a 100+ average. Read the rest of this entry »

PartyPoker.com World Grand Prix – Semi-Final Round-Up

Posted on October 8th, 2011

BRENDAN DOLAN created history with a nine-dart finish as he won through to the PartyPoker.com World Grand Prix final on Saturday night, knocking out reigning champion James Wade to set up a decider against Phil Taylor at the New Citywest Convention Centre.

The 38-year-old from Northern Ireland produced the performance of his life in a 5-2 defeat of world number three Wade, which was crowned when he hit a perfect leg in taking the game’s second set.

Dolan opened the leg with a 160 score before adding a 180 and a 161 finish for the first-ever nine-darter in the double-start tournament – earning him a £5,000 bonus.

He is also now guaranteed a minimum pay-day of £40,000 for reaching the final and could take home the winner’s cheque if he can overcome nine-time champion Phil Taylor on Sunday night.

“It’s absolutely brilliant,” said Dolan. “I’ve only done three or four normal nine-darters in practice, so to do one on TV with a double-start is amazing.

“After I hit the and 160 and 180, I was concentrating so hard on getting the seventh dart in the treble 20. When I hit the treble 17 I just knew the bullseye was going to go in, I felt that comfortable up there.

“It’s the greatest moment of my career – to hit a nine-darter and get to the final of a major tournament is brilliant and the only thing that can out-rank it is to win the final now.” Read the rest of this entry »
