Hot shot ten Berge gunned down by The Assassin

Yorkshire’s Martin “The Assassin” gunned down Dutch hot shot Joey ten Berge 3-2 in a 36-minute thriller to ease into the second round

The 43-year-old 11th seed was forced to dig deep into his reserves and defy countless missed doubles to book a place in the last 16.

The Assassin blazed into the match hitting a maximum in the second leg and following up with a 116 checkout in the third, narrowly missing a repeat finish in the next, clinching the opening set on double 18 after Ten Berge, who had hit a brace of 180s missed double 18 twice for a 96 checkout to save the set.

Ten Berge defied four missed doubles to take the opening leg of the second set and punished Atkins in the next after he wired double tops for an eye-catching 120 finish. Two further missed doubles proved costly for the man from Leeds as the Dutch clinched the set unchallenged with a 90 checkout finished on bull.

Atkins then overcame missed doubles to fire in winning doubles to open up a 2-0 lead in the third set, hitting the outer bull for a show-stopping 167 finish. Ten Berge missed double 18 for a 116, Atkins pouncing to take double one and open up a 2-1 match lead.

Confident Webster powers into second round

Defending champ and second seed Mark Webster swept into the second round whitewashing Dutch newcomer Willy van der Wiel 3-0.

It took Webby from Denbigh – an apprentice plumber – just 23 minutes to wash away the title aspirations of the 26-year-old from southern Holland.

It was a clinical and confident display from the left hander who is bidding to emulate Eric Bristow and Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld and successfully retain his title.

Webster seized the initiative from the off, taking the opening set against the throwing advantage. He edged 2-0 in front, the young Dutchman nipping in to annex the third on double 18.

Van der Wiel hit a maximum in the next but then missed five double attempts to level, the defending champ also requiring five attempts to clinch the set on double five.

Debutant Krysztof Ratajski pole-axed by “Mad Max”

Eighth seed Edwin Max survived a spell of double trouble to topple Polish debutant Krysztof Ratajski 3-2 and move into the second round.

But the man from the Hague was made to work hard for his 50-minute victory by the exciting newcomer to the world stage.

The Pole marched on to the stage to the “Mission Impossible” theme music but it was Max who was finding difficulty as the East European twice led the first set.

Ironically, the opening four legs of the first set went against the throwing advantage before Max captured the set on double eight – remarkably the five games fought out at breakneck speed of just 10 minutes.
