PartyPoker.com World Grand Prix – Night Four Round-Up
Posted on October 7th, 2011
PHIL TAYLOR brushed off the challenge of Paul Nicholson to sweep into the quarter-finals of the PartyPoker.com World Grand Prix on Thursday night, as Mark Webster, Mark Hylton and Richie Burnett also won through to the last eight.
World number one Taylor continued his bid for a tenth victory in the double-start format with a comfortable straight-sets victory over Nicholson, who failed to live up to the pre-match hype as he took on the Stoke great.
Taylor dropped just three legs in the game, and hit key finishes of 105, 120 and 147 in setting up a quarter-final with Mark Webster on Friday night.
“I’m really pleased with the win and it’s another indication that my game’s in good shape at the moment,” said Taylor. “Paul didn’t play as well as he can. He’s making a name for himself at the moment and he’s a very good player, but he’s not as consistent enough yet.”
Webster, who defeated Taylor in the quarter-finals of the World Championship in January, set up a repeat of that clash with a strong 3-1 defeat of Alan Tabern. Read the rest of this entry »

JUSTIN PIPE won his first professional title with a 6-5 defeat of Phil Taylor in Sunday’s Players Championship at the New Citywest Convention Centre in Dublin.

He had already achieved one ‘first’ for the day when he reached his maiden PDC ProTour final, having reached the last four on three occasions already this year.
His run included 6-5 wins against Mark Dudbridge and Ronnie Baxter, a whitewash of Mick Todd and 6-4 victories in the quarter-finals against Steve Beaton and the semi-finals against Gary Anderson, Pipe’s regular practice partner. Read the rest of this entry »

Part Wins Canadian Players Championship
Posted on August 28th, 2011
JOHN PART came out on top to record a superb home victory in Saturday’s London Ontario Players Championship to claim his third PDC Pro Tour title of 2011.
The three-time World Champion defeated the top seed, Wes Newton, 6-4 in the final to continue his superb resurgence of form over the last few months.
The Canadian star had overcome Shawn Brennerman and Mareno MIchels by 6-4 scorelines in his opening two matches before ending the challenge of Kevin Painter to reach the Quarter-Finals.
Part then defeated Peter Wright by a 6-4 scoreline to reach the last four where he defeated Jamie Caven, which included an 11-dart-finish to seal a spot in the final after Caven had missed a dart at bullseye to force a deciding-leg.
Newton, who has enjoyed a superb 2011 so far, led the final 3-1 before Part hit-back by winning three legs on the trot to take a 4-3 advantage.
Newton won the eighth leg to level at four apiece before Part recorded a 76 finish to lead again and move one leg away from victory.
A 180 in the tenth leg proved decisive for Part and he hit the winning double to take the £6,000 first prize.
Newton’s run to his fourth final of the year started with victories against John Patterson, Magnus Caris and Bruce Davey. Read the rest of this entry »

Blood on Muswell Hill
Posted on August 8th, 2011
Oliver Albert Croft OBE formed the British Darts Organisation on January 7th 1973. During the next four decades he ruled British darts from Muswell Hill with an iron fist. Uncompromising, pioneering, and despotic, it is worth remembering that the BDO itself was a breakaway from the National Darts Association of Great Britain. Olly was once a rebel himself.
On August 7th 2011, precisely 38 years and 7 months after the inception of the BDO, Olly Croft was booted off the board he founded in a ruthless but long-overdue coup by his member counties. A man who once said “I don’t owe any darts player a living” now finds himself out of work.
One side of the tungsten curtain holds Olly Croft up as a standard bearer for darts, rightly stating that the sport would not be where it is today were it not for Olly’s efforts over four decades. He helped drag darts out of the pubs and onto prime time television, turning working men who throw arrers into household names.
The other side of the curtain readily grant this indisputable fact but counter that darts would now be in a much healthier condition if Olly Croft had relinquished his grip some years ago.
Given the parlous state of relations with the BBC, and the dwindling attraction of BDO darts as a sporting spectacle, this point is also difficult to refute. The world has changed, the landscape of darts has changed, but Olly and his friends have not.

What Makes a Good Darts Player?
Posted on July 20th, 2011
“Are you any good?” ARGH! The dreaded question that comes to anyone seen in close proximity to tungsten… How do you respond to that? Rather than get philosophical, I’d prefer to just say no, or a semi-desperate; “I try!”
So what makes a good darts player?
I asked my followers on Twitter this question a couple of months ago and had varied responses from many different people.
Some people keep count of their 180’s. Yes, scoring a maximum is something to be proud of, but unless you score them frequently is it luck or skill? A good way of monitoring your skill may be to keep track of your averages, but then what constitutes a good average? The only way would be to compare, but who would you compare with? No one is going to want to judge their averages on Taylor’s 118 are they?!

Cullen Bags 2nd Youth Tour
Posted on June 18th, 2011
JOE CULLEN won his second PDC Unicorn Youth Tour event of 2011 with a 4-2 defeat of Holland’s Gino Vos in Saturday’s final in Nuland.
Cullen followed up last month’s victory in Austria with another Continental triumph as he took the €660 first prize at the Van Der Valk Hotel.
He had whitewashed Jimmy van Schie in his opening game, and edged past Jamie Landon and Wouter Vaes before picking up a 3-0 quarter-final victory against Holland’s Ryan de Vreede.
Cullen then defeated last week’s Youth Tour winner Reece Robinson 4-2 in the semi-finals, and produced a classy display in the decider against Vos.
Cullen hit double top and double eight to break in two of the opening three legs, with Vos hitting back with a 58 finish in the second after a missed double 18 from his opponent. Read the rest of this entry »

Both poker and darts are highly popular pursuits. The games are available online, in fact, that there are organizations dedicated to making sure the rules of video poker and online darts are conformed. Similar to darts having the World Darts Federation, among others, and poker has the Tournament Directors Association. These rules are put into place in highly competitive tournaments, in which as many as hundreds or even thousands of people compete for cash prizes as well as prestige.
