RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD made an imperious start to his bid for a sixth World Championship on Sunday night – but Anastasia Dobromyslova’s Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship hopes were shattered by Remco van Eijden.
Dutch legend van Barneveld produced arguably his smoothest display of 2008 to defeat qualifier Mark Stephenson in straight sets at Alexandra Palace – having gone back two years in time with a change to an old set of darts.
Having struggled to settle with various different darts since claiming the 2007 World Championship, van Barneveld was in top form to average over 100 and drop just one leg to reach round two, where he meets Wes Newton.
“I’m very pleased because there’s a lot of pressure on your first game,” said van Barneveld. “I’ve worked hard recently and gone back to my old darts and I feel confident.”
