Mens Final

Stephen Bunting (England) 7 v 4 Alan Norris (England)

2014 Lakeside World Darts ChampionshipStephen Bunting is the 2014 Lakeside Champion. The BDO No.1 backed up his ranking with a 7-4 victory over Alan Norris in Sunday night’s final to collect the £100,000 winners cheque.

Bunting came to the Frimley Green final night as the top ranked player in his chosen code, the holder of 8 BDO titles, twice winner of the Winmau World Matchplay and the bookies favourite for the title.

Alan ‘Chuck’ Norris could not boast the same level of success from the circuit but his performance over the previous week  included dumping out defending Champion Scott Waites and made him a genuine contender for the title.

Norris started well taking the first set 3-1 against the darts and held throw in the opening leg of the second set to maintain the advantage. Bunting though squared things up in the next and went on to win the set by the same scoreline.

The third set saw Norris again take the lead before Bunting leveled to force a deciding leg. With Bunting sat on an tricky 164 out shot Norris missed 121 then failed to clean up 25 on his next visit allowing Bunting to take the set and move ahead 2-1.

Despite punching in an 11 dart leg and benefiting from missed doubles from Norris, Bunting was unable to convert 4 darts to go two sets clear and left the door open for ‘Chuck’ to level the match.

The Bullet bounced back and restored his lead by  taking the fifth set 3-1 with a confident two dart 82 finish (Bull, D16).

He broke the Norris throw in the opening leg of the sixth set only for the Yeovil man to return the favour by nailing back to back 180’s before killing off 64. The set went to a fifth leg and again Bunting missed set darts before Norris seized the opportunity to square the match at 3 sets each.

Following the interval Bunting returned to the stage to steal the seventh set in another deciding leg and won the eighth convincingly 3-1 to edge closer towards the title and giving himself a two set cushion at 5-3.

Bunting then put himself within one set of the trophy as he reeled off the next 3 legs without reply. Norris hit back with an 11 darter in the opening leg of the tenth set, and went on to win the set 3-1 with a brilliant 140 checkout.

Bunting though had victory in his sights and marched on taking a thrilling final set 3-1, after moving 2-0 ahead thanks to a 104 finish. Norris had threatened to lengthen the match taking out 113 under pressure in the next leg before Bunting hit the match dart.
