There are various ranking systems employed by the bodies who run the tournaments throughout the year. The PDC employ a straight ranking system based on a rolling two years performance. They will be moving to an order of merit system in January 2007 based on winnings.

The BDO/WDF have various systems in place based on points won in certain tournaments with different cut off dates depending on the tournament. A full explanation of how the ranking systems work can be found here.
