TOURNAMENT DETAILS
The 28th staging of the hugely competitive BDO British International Team Championships at Leisure World, Bridlington, will see the home nations of Wales and Scotland determined to end the winning runs of England Men and England Women.
England Men are on a high following their impressive victory in the Six Nations Cup in February, and remain unbeaten in these Internationals since 2001. England Women can boast an even better record, because they are unbeaten since 1999!
This year is also unique for England, because both Captains are the reigning 2007 Lakeside World Professional Darts Champions.
Martin Adams won the famous title in January following an epic final with Phill Nixon, who has been recalled to the England Squad for these Internationals. And Trina Gulliver made it a ‘Magnificent Seven’ when she collected her 7th World Pro title at Lakeside just a few months ago. Both are worthy World Champions as well as being wonderful ambassadors for the sport of darts.
Yorkshire’s very own Scott Waites is back in the England squad, and very much the in-form player of the year. Both he and England favourite John "Boy" Walton are Bradford born.
Scott, proud captain of Yorkshire’s table-topping Premier League county side, won his first ever major – the Dutch Open - in February, and then followed up with runner-up spot in the Scottish Open and victory in the recent Welsh Masters.
Scotland Men, who last won this title in 2000, will be keen to repeat that victory here this weekend. Certainly they have great players in their ranks, including two who performed very well at Lakeside this year – Captain Mike Veitch and the ever-consistent Paul Hanvidge.
Wales Men are captained by Martin Phillips, who was back at Lakeside again this year and is now Wales’ most capped player of all time. He is joined by Lakeside debutant Mark Webster (both left-handers) who is the reigning WDF Europe Cup Singles Champion. They will be hoping to inspire Wales Men to their first ever BDO British Internationals title.
“These Internationals are always fiercely contested because both personal and national pride is at stake”, says Olly Croft of the BDO. “We are certainly in for another great weekend of darts in Bridlington, but in addition to the players, we must send our grateful thanks to all the dedicated officials who give up so much of their time to ensure the smooth running of these Internationals.
“Not forgetting, of course, our wonderful hosts here in Bridlington for their warm welcome and generous hospitality, and all the darts fans in and around the resort who give such great support”.
