TOURNAMENT DETAILS
The 2006 World Matchplay was staged at Blackpool Winter Gardens with Colin Lloyd hoping to hold on to his title and Phil Taylor trying harder than ever to win back his crown. Two defeats in the last two tournaments had put The Power in unknown territory and it was fascinating watching his reaction at Blackpool. The absence of Raymond van Barneveld, who failed to qualify, was a huge relief to the players involved as he had been in top form
since crossing from the BDO. With Wes Newton making his 'home debut', Dennis Priestley shining on stage again and some hungry newcomers such as Andy Hamilton making their debut here, the stage was set for some top throwing and high drama. John Part took the Las Vegas Desert Classic title earlier this month and he was hungry for more. Any player that could hit top form and shine for the week in the heat and atmosphere of the Winter Gardens, had a good chance of taking the title. With total
prize money of £150,000 it promised to be a great spectacle.
